Thinking about litigation? In New York, knowing the law is only half the job. You’ve got to read the room, handle strong personalities, solve problems, and know when to push and when to find common ground.

If you can do that, litigation might be your game. 🗽

Some Fridays are for slowing down. Others are for getting it done.

Three deals. A major litigation deadline. A city that’s already checked out for the summer.

But when clients are counting on you, the work doesn’t pause. You find a way to keep moving, solve the problem in front of you, and get the job done.

That’s the reality of practicing law in New York.

Litigation is unpredictable. One day you’re responding to a routine move from opposing counsel, and the next, you’re dealing with something you never saw coming.

The key is knowing how to adapt, stay focused, and keep moving forward when the pressure is on.

Because in New York litigation, you’re going to take hits. The difference is what you do next.

Big cases. Real discovery. Real conversations.

For our summer interns, the learning goes beyond the classroom. Working closely with attorneys means asking questions, exploring arguments, and seeing how the law comes together in practice.

That’s the kind of experience that builds great lawyers.

A car accident can happen in seconds. Knowing what to do afterward can make a big difference.

Here are 10 important steps to keep in mind:

1. Make sure you and your passengers are okay.
2. Call 911 if you feel injured.
3. Move your vehicle to a safe location, if possible.
4. Take photos and videos of the vehicles, license plates, and damage.
5. Exchange insurance and license information with the other driver.
6. Speak with the police and give a truthful account of what happened.
7. Identify witnesses and any nearby security cameras.
8. Seek medical attention if you feel you need it.
9. Notify your insurance carrier about the accident.
10. Complete a No-Fault application within the required timeframe.

A few minutes of careful documentation can matter later.

What makes a legal internship truly valuable?

Sometimes, it’s getting close to the work.

Our summer interns are getting hands on experience with discovery, evidence, depositions, and the kinds of conversations that make you think differently about a case.

At a boutique firm, there’s room to ask questions, challenge ideas, and have real conversations with attorneys.

Because some of the best lessons in law happen outside the classroom.

“Ambulance chaser.”

It’s an easy phrase to use when you’ve never had your life turned upside down by a serious injury.

But ask the family whose main source of income suddenly can’t work.

Ask the parent trying to protect their children after a devastating accident.

Ask the family wondering how they’re going to pay the bills and keep moving forward when someone else’s negligence changed everything.

They’re not looking for a payday. They’re looking for a way forward.

No amount of money can undo a tragedy. It can’t bring someone back or restore what was lost.

But it can help a family survive the financial consequences of something that should never have happened.

That isn’t ambulance chasing.

It’s accountability. It’s protection. And sometimes, it’s what gives a family the chance to keep going.

This summer, we accepted two exceptional legal interns to assist our team: Zhaklene, an incoming 1L at Fordham Law, and Max, a rising junior at Harvard.

They were thrown into the deep end on one of our firm’s largest federal cases, working through thousands of pages of discovery, depositions, interviews and video evidence in preparation for a major court filing. Every day was a deep-dive; every area was new subject matter for them.

What impressed us most wasn’t simply their work ethic. It was their pliability and judgment. Their ability to listen, think critically, understand people, recognize strategy and ask the right questions.

(This last one is my favorite — ask questions. Ask a ton of questions.)

Neither is an attorney yet. Neither have any prior legal training. But now, both already understand the essence of advocacy.

Over the next few posts, you’ll hear from them about what they learned, what surprised them, and what it was like to prepare a major case for trial.

A lawyer’s impact doesn’t stop when the workday ends.

From evaluating judicial candidates to giving back through bar associations and pro bono work, Thomas Papain shares why serving the legal community is an important part of the profession.

The law is a profession. Make your impact extend beyond your practice.

How are you making a difference beyond the office?
