“This is a travesty that could’ve been prevented, and now with the public uproar and an election coming up in five weeks, New York state politicians are scrambling like they support victims. Shameful.”

We are grieving, furious, and standing with Jane Doe. She alleges that in 2024, when she was just a 20-year-old Cornell student, she was drugged and brutally s*xually assaulted by seven members of Cornell’s Chi Phi fraternity. She reported the assault — and was failed at every step.⁠

We are relieved that the Tompkins County district attorney has now decided to reopen the investigation. But we are deeply disturbed that DA Matthew Van Houten said Jane Doe’s “voluntary intoxication” was one reason he did not bring charges against the men she accused — or even investigate her allegations.

⁠Under current New York law, whether someone can legally consent can depend on HOW they became intoxicated. Someone who became intoxicated “voluntarily” — meaning they chose to drink alcohol — means they are NOT given the same protections as someone who was drugged or given alcohol without their consent. This is known as New York’s “voluntary intoxication” loophole.⁠

⁠And we think it’s disgusting. An intoxicated person cannot consent. Full stop. Drinking before a party is NOT consent. And being drunk does NOT give anyone permission to s*xually assault another person.⁠

⁠That’s why UltraViolet Action is joining allies to call on New York Governor Kathy Hochul and Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie to close this dangerous loophole.⁠

The New York Senate has already unanimously passed legislation to fix it. Now we’re calling on Hochul and Heastie to bring the State Assembly back into session and close this loophole for good. ⁠

And to think it all started in NYS with advocates including myself fighting for decades to pass Child Victims Act.Gov. Cuomo signing into law 2019.The victims involving Catholic Church now settled for billions of 💵 across 🇺🇸.

The Archdiocese of San Francisco and lawyers for the survivors said the money would settle about 530 claims from people who said they were s*xually abused by clergy members.

According to ICE, the man taken into custody in East Durham on Saturday is being held without bond under the Laken Riley Act. He was previously arrested last week by sheriff’s deputies following an alleged incident with a 14-year-old girl.

Shocking Asher Lovy and NYC advocates worked hard to get city council to pass unanimously. Adams vetoed it on
Christmas Eve . The bill had a look back that victims of all abuse, including child s*x abuse could go back and seek justice while I understand the mayors concern about lawyers, taking advantage it was unwise of him to veto a bill that would help victims heal .  This is a double blow this week as a court threw out close to 500 adult survivor cases involving r**es and s*xual sites and prisons, and now the mayor of New York City vetoes a bill that was worthy of being signed.
