Meet Stephanie!

Stephanie is a Legal Assistant to Emily M. and Kim. She graduated from University of Louisville in December 2020 with a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science and Psychology, with a minor in French. She is trilingual and professionally fluent in Spanish, English, and French! As of this November, she will have been with Waters, Tyler, Hofmann & Scott for five years. Her goal working in the legal field is to help make legal information and help more accessible and easier to understand, specifically for diverse communities which may face barriers to that information.

Stephanie has always had a love for the legal system, ever since she was part of the magnet program at Central High School. Her first job was an internship at a pesronal injury law firm in 2012, and she has had lots of experience working at law firms handling different types of law (workers comp, personal injury, insurance litigation, etc.) and learning new things. She also had the opportunity to help military veterans seeking resources by connecting them to what they needed.

In her free time, Stephanie enjoys spending quality time with her three kids, Faith, Oaklynn, and Wesley, planning family gatherings, traveling, video gaming, fishing, hiking, cooking, reading, and writing.

Thanks for all you do, Stephanie!

It's FAQ Thursday!

Today's Frequently Asked Question is, "My family knows what I want when I pass, do I really need an estate plan?"

The simple answer is, yes! Everyone over 18 years old needs an estate plan. Even if you feel your loved ones know what you would want to happen to your stuff after you pass away, having an established estate plan ensures your wishes are followed as closely as possible. Additionally, estate plans are so much more than just putting a Last Will in place. Estate plans can also include financial and healthcare powers of attorney to establish a decision-maker if you are incapacitated and incapable of making decisions yourself. They can also include a Living Will, to dictate your medical choices on pain relief, nutrition, and more.

Speaking to an experienced estate planning attorney can help you navigate what aspects of an estate plan are right for you. Contact our team today to set up your FREE consultation with one of ours.

It's What is it Wednesday!

What is an Executor?

An executor is the person you choose to carry out the instructions in your will after you pass away. Think of them as the person responsible for making sure your final wishes are followed.

An executor may be responsible for filing your will with the court, gathering and managing your "stuff", paying debts and taxes, and distributing property to your beneficiaries.

Most people who are chosen to be Executor may not know how to start in their role. Seeking guidance from an attorney experienced in estate administration and probate can be helpful and take off some stress during an already difficult time.

We have several experienced attorneys who are dedicated to helping families throughout the estate administration process. Have questions or are seeking guidance? Contact us today!

Today's Frequently Asked Question is, "How long do I have to file a lawsuit?"

The answer to this question depends on what state you're filing a lawsuit in and what type of case it is. This is called the "Statute of Limitations." This can be anywhere between two years and 20 years in Indiana.

In Indiana, you have two years to file a lawsuit for personal injury, property damage, trespassing, wrongful death, and malpractice cases. You have six years for oral contract disputes, fraud, and debt collection. You have ten years for written contract disputes. This can all vary by state. If you're looking to file a lawsuit and aren't sure how long you have to do so based on your situation, consult an attorney.

Think we're the right fit for your case? Contact our office today to see if we can help you and schedule a consultation to go over your options.
