🏠 Tips for Working with Contractors 🏠

As our community continues to recover from the tornado, we want to make sure that those affected know about information and resources that may help.

We have some tips for working with contractors. Taking a few extra steps now can save homeowners time, money, and headaches later.

Choosing a Contractor:

✅ Don't fall victim to pressure. Get at least 3 estimates before choosing a contractor.

✅ Ask for a copy of their Certificate of Liability Insurance.

✅ Be cautious of out-of-state contractors and “storm chasers.” If something goes wrong, they can be difficult to track down and hold accountable.

💡 Whenever possible, work with a local contractor and ask whether subcontractors will be involved in your project.

✅ Verify the contractor is licensced. Wisconsin homeowners can verify a contractor’s license here: 📋 https://license.wi.gov/s/license-lookup

🔍 Before choosing a contractor, check for complaints with these agencies:

• Wisconsin Bureau of Consumer Protection: (800) 422-7128
• Better Business Bureau: (800) 273-1002

Have a written contract!

✅ Avoid large down payments without a clear, signed contract.

✅ Read every contract carefully and make sure you understand it before signing.

✅ Make sure you understand who is responsible for costs if your insurance company does not pay.

✅ A proper contract should include:

• Contractor’s name and address• Start and completion dates• Detailed scope of work• Materials being used• Total project cost• Warranty information

✅ Request a copy of the "Notice of Consumer’s Right to Receive Lien Waivers" before signing.

✅ Make sure to obtain and keep a copy of the fully signed contract.

After signing a contract:

✅ Any changes to the project should always be documented in writing.

⚠️ Don’t forget to collect lien waivers from anyone you pay for construction or repair work. Without them, you could be held responsible if a contractor fails to pay their suppliers or workers -- a lien could even be placed against your home.

Please share these resources with anyone who may benefit.

Remley Law is proud to celebrate 64 years of serving the Fox Valley this month. We could think of no better way to mark this milestone than by giving back to the community that has placed so much trust in us over the past six decades.

Earlier this week, three of our attorneys, supported by two of our amazing team members, volunteered their time and talents at our Tornado Victims Insurance Policy Review Clinic. Meeting and speaking with neighbors who have lost so much was a humbling experience, and we were honored to help in a small way.

Many thanks to the Menasha Library for hosting us.

Attorneys Matt Borkovec, Eric Fuehrer, and Jolene Schneider met with community members to review their insurance policies and help them better understand their options during the recovery process.

A special thank you to paralegals Shelly and Katrina, whose support, organization, and dedication to this event helped the clinic run smoothly. We couldn’t have done this without them.

As our community continues to rebuild, we send our neighbors and their families our continued wishes for peace, strength, and hope.
