Wilson County Teen Court Attends TN Court of Appeals Cases in Nashville
Approximately 30 volunteers with the Wilson County Teen Court program were present to watch the Court of Appeals hear oral arguments in Nashville last week. These volunteers also serve as jurors in the program.
Also in attendance was Judge Barry Tatum, Judge of the Juvenile Court, and Gary Vandever, the Director of the Wilson County Teen Court.
The Wilson County Teen Court program is part of the Tennessee Youth Courts Program. The Teen Court allows youth charged with status or delinquent offenses to be sentenced by their peers and allows them to avoid an appearance in juvenile court. Some court members will be actual jurors in cases and determine sentences for certain offenses. The punishments are set out in the Tennessee Code Annotated and include but are not limited to writing apology letters, attending classes sponsored by juvenile court, or participating in teen court as jurors.
