The State of Tennessee plans to execute Christa tomorrow, September 30.

The State recognizes she is a victim of horrific childhood r**e and sexual assault. State attorneys acknowledged this last month. Yet, it is unwilling to act upon its own laws to protect victims of such assault.

Choosing to end Christa’s life by lethal injection does not put an end to violence, but continues its non-virtuous cycle. Tennesseans deserve better.

“She was sexually molested before she could talk,”says Kelly Gleason, attorney for Christa Pike, in the new Criminally Obsessed documentary on Christa Pike. Christa Pike was assaulted countless times throughout her childhood, starting as early as a toddler by her grandmother’s boyfriend, Ernest. These assaults permanently changed Christa; they changed her perception of safety, and they taught her that the people she should have been able to trust could hurt her.

Christa’s mistreatment is not an excuse for her crime; she understands that what she did was horrific, and she feels remorse for her crime. Rather, this information provides powerful context for how Christa’s brain was working at the time of the crime: she was unmedicated, reeling from the effects of her physical and sexual abuse, and confusing violence for affection with her boyfriend, Tadaryl Shipp. Now that she has had time to stabilize, Christa understands how wrong she was, and she has changed.

BREAKING NEWS: Tennessee Governor Bill Lee has just denied clemency for Christa Pike.

Pike’s attorneys, Steve Ferrell, Kelly Gleason, and Randy Spivey, released a statement on the matter today, describing the decision to deny clemency as “ignoring what both science and our legal system have decided: an 18-year-old brain is not an adult brain, and 18 is too young to face ex*****on.”

Despite suffering from decades of physical and sexual abuse and undiagnosed mental illnesses, Christa Pike turned her life around once incarcerated. She was put on medication for her bipolar disorder and PTSD, she started attending regular therapy, and she learned just how wrong her actions were. Now, “Christa is a 50-year-old remorseful woman who understands her actions, receives proper treatment for her mental illness, and provides for and guides fellow incarcerated women.”

This week leading youth advocates and childhood trauma experts gathered to call on Governor Lee to commute Christa Pike’s sentence to life without parole.

Sarah Bailey, who got to know Christa when she was incarcerated with her, spoke about how Christa and Colleen were both “failed in different ways.”

Barbara Holden Nixon, a leader in combatting adverse childhood experiences in Tennessee, said: “Clemency offers the opportunity to apply our updated understanding of the child Christa was and the profound consequences of what happened to her. Commuting Christa’s sentence would still hold her accountable for the terrible crime she committed, but it would recognize what decades of research has taught us about the lifelong consequences of severe childhood adversity.

NEWS UPDATE: 🚨 Today, Christa Pike’s defense team released a statement following the Tennessee Supreme Court’s order denying a stay of ex*****on. “We are deeply disappointed in the Tennessee Supreme Court’s decision, but we will press forward, seeking relief from the U.S. Supreme Court while also continuing our request that Governor Lee grant Christa clemency.” They go on to say: “Now that he is equipped with information and understanding the jury never had, Governor Lee can consider the totality of Christa’s life and circumstances and right these wrongs by commuting her death sentence to life without parole. We remain hopeful that he will.”
