Peter Schoemann, a partner in our Orlando office, serves on the board of PALS -Providing Autism Links & Support, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit supporting individuals with autism and their families throughout Central Florida.

Through its Art & Autism exhibitions, PALS and UCF CARD - Center for Autism and Related Disabilities provide artists with autism an opportunity to share their creativity, perspectives, and artistic
voices with the broader community.

For Pete, this work is deeply personal. Both of his sons are autistic, and he has had the privilege of watching them develop their own interests, talents, and paths in life. His son, Kenneth Eckstein-Schoemann, is a visual artist whose paintings have been included in the Art & Autism exhibitions.

We are proud to support PALS and UCF CARD and to help share
the stories behind this important celebration of creativity and inclusion.

During Hispanic Heritage Month, Nelson Mullins and the Engagement and Opportunity Committee recognize the generations of Hispanic and Latino individuals whose cultures, contributions, and achievements have helped shape our communities and the legal profession.

We celebrate their lasting impact and the perspectives, traditions, and experiences that continue to enrich our firm, our profession, and the communities we serve.

Twenty-five years ago, in the aftermath of September 11, Nelson Mullins lawyers and staff came together to ask a simple question: How could the firm make a difference?

Inspired by a call from World Trade Center survivor and Port Authority police officer to serve their own communities, the firm reached out to the City of Columbia Fire Department in South Carolina. In conversations with firefighters, Nelson Mullins learned that almost none had wills in place. Wills for Heroes was born that day.

What began as a local pro bono effort grew into Nelson Mullins' nationwide Wills for Heroes program. Just months after its launch, the initiative was presented at the White House and with the support of the American Bar Association, it sparked a national effort to provide pro bono estate planning assistance to first responders.

Over the past 25 years, Nelson Mullins volunteers have prepared thousands of wills and healthcare directives for first responders, veterans, and other frontline workers.

As we mark the 25th anniversary of 9/11, we remember those we lost, honor those who continue to serve, and reflect on the power of pro bono service.

Nelson Mullins partners Robert Brunson and Rush Smith secured a significant appellate victory for the University of South Carolina, with the South Carolina Court of Appeals affirming summary judgment in the University’s favor in COVID-19 tuition refund litigation.

In Bunch v. University of South Carolina, the court rejected claims seeking tuition and fee refunds following USC’s transition to remote instruction during the spring 2020 semester, finding that the University had not contractually promised exclusively in-person instruction. The court also found no basis for reimbursement of fees and held that sovereign immunity barred the plaintiffs’ equitable claims.

“The ruling confirms that USC met its obligations to students during an unprecedented time, while adapting to the challenges of the pandemic and the Governor’s order closing state-supported universities so students could continue their education,” Robert said. “It’s a big win for the state’s flagship university.”

Nelson Mullins served as pro bono counsel alongside the ACLU of Minnesota in representing Kylese Perryman, who was wrongfully arrested and detained after being incorrectly identified as a suspect.

The recently announced settlement with the City of Bloomington brings resolution to the case and includes changes to police department policies and training aimed at preventing similar wrongful arrests in the future.

“Kylese Perryman experienced a profound violation of his person and his rights,” said Nelson Mullins partner Sandra Ezell. “Nelson Mullins is proud to have been selected to represent him as he turned his personal loss into a systemic change. His bravery and commitment to change should be acknowledged as the bright light in this situation. He will always be part of the foundation upon which future change is built.”

The city of Bloomington has settled a lawsuit brought by the ACLU-MN and our pro bono partners on behalf of Kylese Perryman. In 2021, Bloomington police arrested Perryman without probable cause. Perryman was innocent of the crimes he was accused of, but he was jailed for multiple days, had to wear an ankle monitor upon release, and was forced to prove his innocence.

In the settlement, the city of Bloomington agreed to implement policy and training changes within its police department aimed at preventing similar incidents in the future. The city will also provide monetary damages to Perryman.
