Matrix Patent Agency MPA is a Patent agency dedicated to ensuring the protection of your IP with the USPTO by preparing, filing and prosecutin Patent applications.

MPA is a Patent agency dedicated to ensuring the protection of your intellectual property with the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) by preparing and prosecuting patents in the US, and through the PCT process in the rest of the world. Besides being a Patent Agent, I am an Electrical Engineer (and a named inventor in 10 US patents as well as various in other countries), (more about my Vitae at

I have participated in enough electro-optic and mechanical products to be very confident in my ability to understand inventors in most of the electrical, mechanical, software, hardware, medical and business arts. I am completely fluent in Spanish, so I can do the above in two languages! In addition, I spent years as an engineer legally "getting around" other's patents (you do this by carefully examining their claims language and making sure you don't perform functions exactly the same way). So when I draft claims, I do it having experience on both sides of the table. In short, I've been there, done that, and can compare T-shirts with you, whether your experience is as a VC-funded startup, bootstrap, a growing small company or a large Corporation. "20 años no es nada; que es un soplo la vida"...

No, it's not the Super Bowl half-time show again, but two phrases from the famous Carlos Gardel Tango "Volver" (“Twenty years are nothing; life is but a breath.”).

Today, 20 yrs ago, the United States Patent and Trademark Office issued my Patent Registration Number 58,300. And it sure feels like it was but a 'breath' ago that I received that "license to learn" from the agency.

I came to this 'thing of ours' as a co-inventor in eight issued US patents, something that actually does not prepare you for patent prosecution as well as you might think. As is often said, it is one thing to eat sausage, another to make it.

On this month when we celebrate our own inventor President, I celebrate ‘hanging my shingle’ two decades ago and going into business for myself. With the help and support of many colleagues and institutions (see below), I can look back at over 200 issued/allowed Utility and Design patents (In the US and EPO/China/Canada/Japan/Australia).

The above include many great interactions with examiners (get the telephonic interview!), a few 'not so great ones', as well as 18 appeals (resulting in 12 issuances), two oral hearings and pretty much a record of ‘being there, doing that’ in the IP field!

I start my thanks with a heartfelt “Gracias” to my wife Elizabeth for being the Venture Capitalist in this great adventure. Your love and support have been my secret weapon!

To all my clients, who reside in locations from San Juan, Argentina to San Juan, PR, Ottawa, Canada to Paris, FR, Santo Domingo, RD to Manizales (CO) a similar thanks for their trust and support.

Two institutions really deserve special recognition, the Practising Law Institute (PLI) and the National Association of Patent Practitioners (NAPP). Both models for what helping others create a better profession is all about.
