Did you know? In Illinois, child support generally ends when a child graduates high school or turns 19—whichever comes first. At this point, the child is considered “emancipated.”
However, there are situations where parents may still be required to contribute:

✅ Post-secondary education expenses: Supporting a child’s college journey, whether they live at home or away.
✅ Disabled adult children: Ensuring the well-being of children who require ongoing support.

Every family is unique, and the law considers various factors to determine what is appropriate for both parents and the child.

💡 Time for a review? If your child support was calculated years ago and circumstances like income changes or a child’s emancipation have occurred, it may be worth exploring a modification.

Child support ensures that both parents contribute to the well-being of their children, even after separation. The amount in Illinois is based on parents' income and parenting time.

Parents may also share expenses like medical bills and extracurricular activities. Support may continue for disabled adult children or help with college expenses.
