Rise Up Mystic RiseUpMystic is a local, grassroots movement for progressive change. There are no requirements to join us, all are welcome.

To become an official member, please sign up for our email list. It began on November 10th, 2016, the morning after the presidential election, as we felt the weight of an upcoming administration born out of fear and hate. It began with long low sighs of disbelief as we greeted one another at work and at bus stops, with looks of despair as we imagined the repercussions of electing a person with no political experience and no decorum on the international stage. It began as brave Americans started to realize in order to keep our country truly a land of the free and continue to honor democracy, that we the people are going to have to rise up, defend our shared values, and fight for the rights of the marginalized. It began when we knew it was time for action. We gathered to envision what a grassroots organization designed to counter the effects of the upcoming administration might look like. We came together to end the divisiveness and begin a conversation, to end negativity and create positive change. It was clear there was a lot of ground to cover. Protecting people of color and LGBT communities, defending issues of women’s health, protecting the environment, supporting the ACLU, and staying true to America’s roots as a land that accepts and appreciates immigrants. The overwhelming change in government demands a clear and organized response. We want to inform, encourage and empower as many people as possible to speak out for progressive change, to fight for human rights, and to preserve the dignity of our beloved nation.

SB 397 put the most basic limits on how Flock camera data is used, and Greg Howard still voted against it. Even Connecticut’s police standards council says those limits should be tighter. Every Republican state senator who showed up voted no, including Ryan Fazio, who now wants to be governor. Our own state senator, Heather Somers, didn’t vote at all.

Knocking on doors is the most effective thing you can do to help a campaign. Yale researchers found it beats phone calls, mailers, and leaflets for getting people to vote.

No experience needed. You'll get a list and a short script, and you can bring a friend or partner with an experienced door knocker at the event.

You’ve got two chances this Saturday, October 10.

⭐ Rally for Joe de la Cruz, running for the 18th State Senate District, at 10am at Washington Park, 155 Meridian St in Groton. Stay after to knock doors, wave signs, or make calls.

⭐ Door knock with Bill Heughins, running for the 43rd House District, from 10am to 2pm at Democratic HQ, 240 Norwich-Westerly Rd, North Stonington.

Stonington police have 14 Flock cameras logging every car that drives by. In other states, ICE has searched that kind of data thousands of times by going through local police. This summer a North Carolina officer was charged with using Flock to track her boyfriend's ex-wife.

This spring the CT legislature passed a bill to put limits on that data and to require ICE to show their face and identify themselves. Our state rep, Greg Howard, voted against these measures twice.

Lawmakers are expected to take up Flock again next session. Bill Heughins opposes the cameras and will vote to keep the protections Connecticut just passed.

If you live in the 43rd House District, vote for Bill Heughins early, October 19 to November 1, or on Election Day, November 3.

This pivotal election season appears to be thin on debates in Connecticut, but I am encouraged to see that the two candidates in what may be one of the most interesting races in the state will face off in person Tuesday.

Reminder! Happening Sunday!

Rock the Vote: this Sunday, Oct. 4, from 1 to 4 p.m. at The Barn at Brookside Farm in Niantic. Steve Elci, Baird Welch-Collins, and Hugh Birdsall are playing in the barn.

The event will also feature a community conversation with local candidates for state House and Senate, so bring your questions and tell them what matters to you!

Stop by the tables from the Visibility Brigades, local Indivisible groups, New London Immigrant Defense and the CT Federation of Democratic Women.

It's free, with a suggested $10 donation. Anything left after event costs goes to Brookside Farm. There's seating inside, or bring a lawn chair and sit outside.

Absentee ballots are available starting today. Early voting runs Oct. 19 to Nov. 1, and Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3.

“Council member Carmen Garcia-Irizarry compared the decision to her work as a scientist.

“As time goes on and new things happen, new information becomes available, there’s new data, then you are allowed to change the decision,” she said. “And when we approved the contract for the Flock cameras, we had certain information at that time.”

Council member Adrienne Parad, who was not on the council when the contract was approved, said she initially had concerns about privacy. Those concerns were eased after then-Chief John Rich gave a presentation in February portraying the technology as a useful tool for law enforcement that did not infringe on residents’ privacy or rights.

“I come from a medical background, so I’ve been thinking all the time about protection of privacy, protection of data,” Parad said. “So it was an interesting thing to see how all of this developed over the course of the summertime. It was pretty rapid developments.”

Chairman Gary St. Vil said Monday’s decision raises broader questions about how local governments should oversee emerging technologies. He said the council wanted to establish a record for future councils to consider as they weigh similar issues.”
