If you have a child away at college (or even one over 18 living at home with you), you should discuss with them the importance of signing a Patient Advocate Designation to ensure they have someone in place to make medical decisions if they become unable to do so on their own. No one wants to receive a phone call like these parents did, but this story really illustrates the importance of advanced planning.

In 2018, New Hampshire mother Shawnee Baker received a call informing her that her daughter Baylie had been involved in a serious accident. Without a legal medical proxy, Baker and her husband, Scott, were told that Baylie's guardianship was in the hands of the hospital's medical ethics committee.
