Harassment doesn’t just take a toll emotionally, it can factor into your case too.

Employees who experience workplace harassment often deal with real consequences beyond the workplace itself: anxiety, stress, sleepless nights, and panic attacks. When pursuing a harassment claim, employees can also recover damages for that emotional distress.

Recovering from pregnancy discrimination takes time. It’s common for someone to need space to process what happened, especially when they’d planned to build their whole career at that company. Reassessing where you stand after something like this isn’t easy, but you have a lot to offer, and you can rebuild your career despite what an employer put you through.

Part 2: what happened after she finally spoke up.
After she reported the harassment, HR conducted an investigation, but the outcome was limited to separating her from the coworker involved. He remained employed. She was left knowing she could still run into him at any time, and the anxiety and panic attacks she’d developed didn’t go away.

The harassment itself stopped, but the hostility didn’t. It shifted into retaliation. She was excluded, treated coldly, and passed over for opportunities she’d previously had. She was even paid less than her male counterparts. Eventually, the environment became so intolerable that she left the company, but she held them accountable and pursued her claim.

Today, she works somewhere with zero tolerance for harassment. She’s thriving and respected in her role.

A real client story: she stayed silent for a year.
She was a high level executive in the medical industry, passionate about her work and focused on advancing her career. Instead of being treated as an equal, she was subjected to offensive and sexually harassing comments that made her feel like an object rather than a professional.

Speaking up felt risky. She worried a complaint would hurt her reputation, stall her career, or lead to retaliation, so she endured it for about a year. Eventually, the conditions became too intolerable to stay silent.

Part two coming soon.

This work matters to me personally because I’ve been in this situation myself. I know what it feels like to work hard for an employer, have your work product used, and then find out you’re dispensable. It hurts your ego and your confidence. That’s why I fight to help people who’ve been taken advantage of and wrongfully terminated, to show them that what happened to them was wrong. There’s nothing better than getting to stand up to the bully for somebody else.

Employers rarely admit they’re pushing someone out because of a pregnancy. Instead, they often point to a legitimate sounding business decision or a restructuring of the department. This is called pretext, and it’s simply an excuse used to cover up what’s really happening.

Restructuring. Position eliminated. Legitimate business decision. These excuses show up a lot after an employee reports something illegal, and they’re not always what they seem. A pattern like that can be retaliation in disguise, and it’s worth taking seriously.
