On this day in 1636, the General Court of the Plymouth Colony instituted the very first legal code on record in North America. The legal code guaranteed all citizens a trial by jury.

On this day in 1890, Yosemite National Park was created by an Act of Congress, making it the third national park in the United States.

Although the park was officially created in 1890, Yosemite Valley and the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias have been preserved since 1864. President Abraham Lincoln signed a bill on June 30, 1864, setting that land aside specifically for public use and recreation. This act was the inception of the national park concept, since this was the first time in U.S. history that land was set aside solely for preservation and recreation for all people.

Murfreesboro Young Professionals' annual Pickleball Tournament was a hit! Scott and Austin may not have walked out with the first place prize, but Scott beating Casey Rainey for the old guy award was priceless. All funds raised from this event go towards our area's awesome non-profits.

On this day in 1789, President George Washington signed the Judiciary Act of 1789, which established the Federal court system.

When the Constitution was written, Article III set parameters for the judicial branch of the government, but it was much shorter than the Articles that developed the legislative and executive branches. The Judiciary Act handled many of the details that went unaddressed in the Constitution. It outlined jurisdiction for the district and circuit courts, as well as the Supreme Court, which largely went unchanged until the Civil War.

In Tennessee, courts rely upon numerous factors to determine the amount and duration of spousal support, but the two most important factors are: (1) Does one spouse *need* alimony; and (2) Can the other spouse *afford* to pay it?

T.C.A. § 36-5-121 explains the various factors that courts consider, but spousal support differs wildly from case to case. Anyone facing a potential alimony claim should consult an experienced divorce lawyer to better understand their options.
