It was an honor to gift a sweet family with this cutting board that my Dad made today. That board represents the years that he spent honing his woodworking skills while working third shift, and selling swings, Christmas decorations and all the other things he made and sold to pay for my college and law school tuition.
Dad retired a few years ago and spends a lot of time in his shop making the most beautiful creations. I often tell him he should be charging 2-3X more than he does because those boards are perfection. You won’t find a blemish anywhere, and they’ll last forever. Every time I tell Dad that he isn’t charging enough, he always replies, “Hon, I don’t do this for the money. I do it because I love woodworking.” I understand exactly what he means regarding my practice. I really do have the best job.
I presented this cutting board to a family whose adoption I finalized this morning. They absolutely loved it! I hope whenever they use it, they are reminded of this special day and it brings them the same joy that they brought to me by blessing me with the opportunity to represent them.
I think it’s really neat that Dad opened “Gene’s Piddle & Whittle Shop” in 1990 (as shown in his insignia on the board), which is the same year I decided to be a family law attorney, and am very proud that two things Dad and I love so much crossed paths in the most endearing way today.
