Just as casinos do not make money off of winners and paying out money, insurance companies do not make money by paying out claims. Both casinos and insurance companies are huge businesses and know really well how to take more of your money than they do paying it back out to you.

Yeah that's gonna be a problem. It's gonna be a problem for them! It's a clear violation of your rights as a consumer! It's an infringement on your constitutional rights. It's outrageous, egregious, preposterous!

"Man sees but a short way into futurity; a single event, unforeseen, deranges all his plans; and teaches us that man with all his wisdom, toils for heirs he knows not who."

- Chief Justice Andrew Kirkpatrick, Nevison v. Taylor, 8 N.J.L. 43, 46 (1824)

I'll make a longer post about Making a Murderer at some point. In the meantime, if a law enforcement officer or government agent is grilling you about whether you committed a crime or not, you have absolutely nothing to gain from engaging them in a dialogue and everything to lose, especially if you are innocent. If you don't believe me, ask Brendan Dassey. A law enforcement officer or government agent is not your friend when they are interrogating you about a crime. Rather, they are trying to get a confession the way a very eager salesman attempts to land a sale and provide evidence for the state to prosecute you.

Ask the officer or agent if you are free to leave and remain silent and leave if you can. If you aren't free to leave, tell them you want an attorney present for any questioning: it is your constitutional right and will end the interrogation. If Brendan Dassey would have done either of these two things, he would not be incarcerated today. However, it is not Dassey's fault. People are taught to respect authority, Dassey was a slow child, and he did not understand the situation or his rights. Dassey was taken advantage of by people who should have been protecting him and no safeguards were present to save him, which are the bigger problems.

Some things for parents to keep in mind when they are going through a divorce and the aftermath: your kids are also subjected to the entire process, and it is not their choice to be part of this process. The Indiana Parenting Time Guidelines state a parent should recognize and address a child's basic needs, which include (not the comprehensive list):

1. The child knowing the divorce is not their fault.
2. The child developing and maintaining an independent relationship with each parent and to have continuing care and guidance from each parent.
3. The freedom from having to side with either parent and freedom from conflict between the parents.
4. Having a relaxed, secure relationship with each parent without being placed in a position to manipulate one parent against the other.

I was thinking about my own experience with my parents' divorce the other day when reading these Guidelines, and #2-4 hit pretty close to home, even after many years. Parents: keep these guidelines in mind, no matter how difficult things are during and after a divorce or how hurt you are.
