DeFur Voran is pleased to announce that Sarah E. Smith has joined the firm as an Associate Attorney in our Elder Law and Estates & Trusts groups. Sarah brings a strong background in advocacy and international law, along with a deep commitment to serving the legal needs of the community.

A Muncie native, Sarah joins the firm with a Juris Doctor from The Catholic University of America, Columbus School of Law, where she was recognized for her academic excellence with a Faculty Merit Scholarship and the Extra Mile Award. During her time in Washington, D.C., Sarah served as a Certified Student Attorney in the Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy Clinic. In this role, she represented vulnerable clients seeking asylum, demonstrating the compassion and advocacy essential for practicing elder law.

It is with deep sadness that we share the news of the passing of our colleague and friend Nicholas C. “Nick” Nizamoff, who died on February 14, 2026, at the age of 83.

Nick’s remarkable legal career spanned over five decades, marked by excellence, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to his clients, the profession, and the community. His thoughtful leadership and collegial spirit left a lasting impact on all who had the privilege of working with him.

Nick’s career began at White & Raub in Indianapolis where he practiced for 30 years and served as a mentor to current DeFur Voran partners Jim Williams, Rob Emmerson and Paul Fulkerson. Nick later practiced with Stuart & Branigan before DeFur Voran was blessed to have Nick choose to finish his career in our halls.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Nick was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He cherished his family, loved Wabash College, and was passionate about reading, music, golf, and the simple joy of shared conversations.

His wisdom, kindness, and dedication will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
