Some pieces of sports history require much more than simply recognizing the names.
DJR Authentication recently completed an in-person authentication and appraisal of this period Reach Official American League baseball bearing 18 signatures associated with members of the inaugural 1933 American League All-Star team.
The identified signers include Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx, Charlie Gehringer, Lefty Gomez, Tony Lazzeri, Bill Dickey, Joe Cronin, Al Simmons, Lefty Grove, and other members of the American League roster.
Following physical examination, comparative signature evaluation, and historical research, DJR Authentication concluded that the baseball and its team attribution are authentic.
Despite substantial age-related wear and signature fading, its historical significance, roster composition, condition, scarcity, and collector demand resulted in an appraised Fair Market Value of $15,000 and Insurance Replacement Value of $22,500.
Items like this are a good example of why important sports memorabilia should not be judged by appearance alone. Authentication, condition, historical context, and market demand can all play an important role in understanding what an object actually is—and what it may be worth.
