It's never actually about the lamp.

Somewhere a few months in, most people find themselves in a genuine standoff over an object neither of them even particularly likes. A lamp. A set of dishes. The good cutting board.

From the outside it looks petty. From the inside it's the only piece of this you can still put your hands on.

The lamp is standing in for something bigger — being heard, being treated fairly, getting some acknowledgment that all those years happened and mattered. Those things are real. They just don't have a line on the asset sheet.

Here's the practical part: the lamp is expensive. Every round of back-and-forth over it costs money that could be going toward your actual future. Part of an attorney's job is helping you tell the difference — this is worth pushing on, and this one is grief wearing a disguise.

Nobody warns you about the waiting.

They warn you about the hard conversation. The paperwork. Telling the kids. Nobody mentions the months in between, where nothing seems to happen and you start quietly wondering whether you made a mistake.

You didn't. Slow is not the same as stuck.

A divorce in New Jersey moves in stages, and some of them are quiet by design — gathering financial records, figuring out what you actually own together, waiting on the other side to respond, working through the steps the court expects before anyone stands in front of a judge. From the outside it looks like nothing is happening. From the inside it feels like nothing is happening. It isn't nothing.

The cases that end badly are usually the ones where someone got tired of waiting and signed just to make it stop.

Your patience is doing something. And you should never have to wonder whether it is — keeping you in the loop is our job.

The decision usually isn't what's keeping you awake.

By the time most people reach out to a family law attorney, they already know how the marriage ends. That part got settled quietly, months ago.

What's keeping you up is the arithmetic. Whether one income covers the mortgage. Whether the house has to go. Whether leaving at 45 means starting over from zero.

That fear is reasonable — and it's the part of this that actually has an answer. In New Jersey, there's no calculator that spits out a number. Alimony depends on the specifics of your marriage: how long it lasted, what each of you earns and could realistically earn, the life you built together, how long one of you has been out of the workforce, who carried the parenting load, and everything one of you contributed that never showed up on a paycheck.

"I think the judge got it wrong."

We hear it all the time. Sometimes you're right — courts do make mistakes, and New Jersey gives you ways to challenge a ruling. You can ask the judge to reconsider, or you can appeal to a higher court.

What most people don't realize: both of those doors close fast. The windows are short and strictly enforced, and they're different for each path. A strong argument filed too late usually doesn't get heard at all.
