Now this is a true mid-century masterpiece! 🍳⚡

During a recent home inspection, we came across this incredible vintage Frigidaire Flair electric range—complete with double eye-level oven doors and a pull-out cooktop drawer.

Popularized back in the 1960s (and famously featured in Bewitched!), these all-in-one cooking centers were the ultimate futuristic appliance flex.

While modern ranges have sleek touchscreens and smart features, nothing quite beats the solid craftsmanship, cool control k***s, and space-saving retro design of these classics. Plus, finding one that’s still in great shape is always a fun treat during inspection day!

One of the most missing safety features we find in kitchens! 🍳⚠️

Every single free-standing oven/range comes with an anti-tip bracket. It’s a small metal bracket installed on the floor or wall behind the stove that catches the rear leg and prevents the entire oven from tipping forward if someone leans on or steps on the open door.

Yet, when we pull ranges forward during home inspections, nearly 90% of the time, that safety bracket is completely missing!

Why is this so important?

Child Safety: Curious toddlers often try to use an open oven door as a step to see what’s cooking above.

Heavy Cookware Protection: Placing heavy roasters or pans on an open door can easily throw off the range’s balance.

Scald & Burn Prevention: A tipping stove means boiling liquids and hot food spill forward instantly.

The good news? It's an easy fix! Anti-tip brackets are inexpensive, widely available at any hardware store, and take just a few minutes to install.

Finding a little piece of nostalgia during a home inspection! ✏️✨

Every now and then when we’re inspecting a basement or workshop, we run into one of these classic hand-crank pencil sharpeners bolted to a wall stud.

If you grew up back in the day, you definitely remember using these! That satisfying crunching sound, the smell of fresh wood shavings, and trying to get that absolute razor-sharp tip before class or homework time.

Discovering these fun, vintage quirks hidden in a home's lower level is always a great reminder of the history and stories behind the properties we inspect every day.

Spotting history (and potential plumbing headaches) on the outside of a house! 🚽🔍

During a recent home inspection in Detroit, we were setting up for a sewer scope when we spotted this distinctive bell vent sticking out of the exterior brick wall.

Seeing one of these bell vents is a clear sign that the property has—or used to have—a whole house trap.

Commonly installed in older homes (especially in Detroit and surrounding areas), house traps were designed to keep sewer gases from coming back into the residence. However, by modern plumbing standards, they often create more problems than they solve:

Prone to Clogs: Because of their tight U-shaped bend, debris and solids can easily build up and cause main line backups.

Camera Obstructions: Whole house traps make standard drain cleaning and sewer camera inspections much trickier to navigate.

The good news? Most of the time, we're still able to bypass or navigate around these traps to get our camera down the line and give our clients a full look at the sewer line's condition.

Never skip the sewer scope on an older home—it's the best way to know what's happening underground before you buy!

What happens when a small metal part causes a major structural reaction? 🧱💥

While inspecting the exterior basement wall on this brick home, we came across a rusted steel lintel above the egress window.

A steel lintel is designed to carry and distribute the weight of the masonry overhead so the window frame doesn't crush. But when metal rusts, it expands—a process known as rust jacking (or lintel jacking).

As that rusted metal expands, it exerts immense upward force, causing:

Fractured and spalling brickwork above the window 🧱

Significant horizontal mortar joint cracking that extends across the wall 🔍

Potential moisture intrusion avenues right into the basement 🌧️

What looks like minor, superficial surface rust can actually end up shifting entire brick courses if left unaddressed over time.

Catching these issues early allows buyers to consult a masonry expert before minor cracking turns into major structural repair bills.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) states that there is no safe level of radon gas. For levels between 2.0 pCi/L and 4.0 pCi/L, the EPA recommends that homeowners consider fixing their home, as some risk of lung cancer remains. At 4.0 pCi/L or higher, the EPA strongly recommends taking action to lower the levels.

Talk about a steamy situation... ♨️🚽

When we inspect a toilet, flushing it, checking for stability, and popping open the tank are standard steps. But on this inspection, the tank was sweating profusely!

The culprit? Someone accidentally hooked the hot water line directly up to the toilet instead of the cold water line. 🤦‍♂️

While a warm toilet seat might sound fancy for winter, filling your toilet tank with hot water is a recipe for trouble:

Condensation Overload: Warm tank + cooler bathroom air = heavy condensation dripping right onto your bathroom floors, which can lead to subfloor damage and mold over time.

Wasted Energy: Heating water just to flush it down the drain will send your utility bills through the roof. 📈

Component Damage: Constant hot water can degrade the rubber seals, flappers, and gaskets inside the tank, leading to leaks much faster.

It’s always the detail-oriented checks that save homeowners from big surprises down the road.

You can paint a room, but you should never paint a roof! 🚫🎨🏠

In this inspection, the seller’s disclosure claimed the roof was completely replaced back in 2020. But once we climbed up to take a closer look, the truth immediately revealed itself: instead of replacing the aging roof, it had simply been painted over to look fresh and new. 🕵️‍♀️🖌️

Cosmetic cover-ups don't fix structural issues. Flipping a shingle revealed the original, aging surface underneath. Plus, a closer look showed clear signs of severe wear:

Missing granules ❌

Cracked shingles ⚡

Exposed nail heads popping through 🔨

When selling a property, honesty is always the best policy. Be accurate on your disclosures, price the home accordingly, and avoid costly legal or negotiation headaches down the line.
