‼️ I wanted to share this SCAO Memo because it proved instrumental in persuading the Court to grant a recent Motion for Destruction of Biometric Data and Arrest Record‼️

My client was charged with domestic violence, and the case was dismissed following a bench trial when the complaining witness failed to appear. I filed a “Motion For Destruction Of Biometric Data And Arrest Record” and the matter was set for Hearing before the Judge. At the hearing, the prosecutor opposed destruction of the fingerprints and arrest record, arguing that the dismissal did not qualify because it resulted from the complaining witness’s failure to appear rather than an acquittal or dismissal by a judge or jury.

At this hearing, I presented the SCAO Memo to support my client’s request for relief. The Court found the memo persuasive and ultimately granted the requested relief 📃

🔅 A great reminder that the right legal authority can make all the difference. Sometimes, finding and presenting the right resource is key to achieving the result your client deserves 🔅

On This Day in Michigan Legal History ⚖️

October 8th marks the anniversary of the death of Judge Lila M. Neuenfelt, a woman who helped change the face of Michigan's judiciary.

In 1941, Judge Neuenfelt became the first woman elected to the Michigan Circuit Court bench👩🏻‍⚖️

🗞️ The headline announcing her election:

“Justice Dons a Skirt”

Hard to imagine that headline today …

… But Judge Neuenfelt didn't just make history by becoming a woman judge.
She went on to preside over cases involving issues that are still very much a part of family law today — divorce, alimony, custody, and division of marital property.

🧐 More than 80 years ago, a woman was sitting on the bench in Wayne County deciding disputes involving families, finances, children and the end of marriages. The laws have certainly changed since then — but some of the questions have not:

🔹Who gets the house?

🔹How should property be divided?

🔹What about alimony (spousal support)?

🔹What happens to the children?

🔹And what happens when one spouse believes the other hasn't been completely forthcoming about the family's assets?

Those are not new questions.

What has changed is who gets to sit behind the bench and answer them.

Judge Neuenfelt's career is a fascinating reminder of just how far women have come in the legal profession — and how recently that journey began.

‼️ So today, on October 8th, let us remember a Michigan legal pioneer whose name deserves to be remembered: Judge Lila M. Neuenfelt‼️

A woman who didn't just practice law.
