Found this gem while cleaning out some old boxes today 📂

Exactly 26 years ago today …
Back when “saving your work” meant carefully ejecting a disk and praying the data survived the trip home. No cloud. No Google Drive. Just hope, a write-protect tab, and maybe a second disk as backup if you were feeling fancy.

‼️ Law school in 2000 ran on these little black squares. Briefs, outlines, notes—everything lived on 1.44 MB of magnetic magic‼️

Technology sure has changed a lot since then 😳 The practice of law has, too.
But the grind of 3L year?
That part feels timeless.

🧐 📜 ✒️ Michigan Supreme Court limits the automobile exception 📝

In a recent appellate decision, People v. Wilkins (2026), the Michigan Supreme Court held 5-2 that the automobile exception does not authorize a warrantless vehicle search based only on probable cause of a civil infraction.

In this particular case, an officer smelled ma*****na and searched a car occupied by people under 21. Under Michigan law, possession of a small amount by someone under 21 is merely a civil infraction. Please note specifically MCL 333.27965 of the Michigan Regulation and Taxation of Ma*****na Act (MRTMA). The search uncovered a fi***rm, and the defendant was charged with carrying a concealed weapon.

The Court ruled that the automobile exception requires probable cause of a crime — not a civil infraction. The odor of ma*****na suggesting a possible civil violation was insufficient.

⚖️ Back at the 39th District Court in Roseville today for MIDC arraignments 🏛️

Equal justice requires equal representation. For me, indigent defense isn’t just a job — it’s a professional and moral duty.
