Medicare Open Enrollment opens today. ๐Ÿ“…

From now through December 7, you can switch plans, change your drug coverage, move between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage, or simply confirm what you have still works.

Here's the part that costs people money: plans change quietly. Your prescriptions can move to a different tier. Your doctor can leave the network. Your premium can shift.

If you do nothing, you're auto-renewed into next year's version of your plan, whatever that looks like now.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Take twenty minutes and review it. Questions about how Medicare fits into your bigger plan? Message us.

"Long-term care" isn't one thing. It's a spectrum. ๐Ÿ

๐Ÿก In-home care: a caregiver comes to you. Best for people who need some help but not constant supervision.

๐Ÿข Assisted living: your own apartment, with meals, activities, and staff available. Good middle ground.

๐Ÿฅ Skilled nursing: 24-hour medical care for people who need it.

๐Ÿง  Memory care: specialized, secured settings for dementia and Alzheimer's.

The costs, the payment sources, and the planning strategies are different for each one.

Reverse mortgages get a lot of noise around them. Here's the plain version. ๐Ÿก

If you're 62 or older with significant home equity, a reverse mortgage lets you convert some of that equity into cash without a monthly mortgage payment.

The catch: interest and fees build over time, the balance grows, and the loan comes due when you move out, sell, or pass away. That can significantly reduce what's left for your heirs.

They're not automatically good or bad. They're a tool with real trade-offs, and they interact with Medicaid eligibility in ways people don't expect.

When someone passes away, the first few days are a blur. Here's what actually needs to happen early: ๐Ÿ“

- Request multiple certified copies of the death certificate (you'll need more than you think)
- Locate the will, trust, and any funeral instructions
- Notify Social Security, pensions, and insurance companies
- Secure the home, vehicles, and any valuables
- Don't rush to distribute anything or close accounts

That last one matters. Well-meaning families often move assets before the legal process starts, and it creates problems later.

Executor. Trustee. Financial agent. Healthcare agent. ๐Ÿ“‹ Four different roles. People mix them up constantly.

Your executor handles your estate after you pass away: filing the will, paying debts, distributing what's left.

Your trustee manages your trust, which can start while you're alive and continue long after you're gone.

Your financial agent acts for you while you're living, if you can't act for yourself. That authority ends at death.

Your healthcare agent makes medical decisions, and only medical decisions.

They can all be the same person. Often, they shouldn't be.

Something a lot of widows and widowers don't know: you may be entitled to survivor benefits. ๐Ÿ’™

If your spouse worked and paid into Social Security, a surviving spouse can often claim benefits as early as age 60, and in some cases, based on a disability, even earlier.

The amount, and the best time to claim, depend on your age, your own work record, and whether you've remarried.

It's one of the more nuanced parts of Social Security, and one of the most overlooked.

If you own a business with someone else, here's a question worth answering before you need to: ๐Ÿข

What happens to their share if they pass away, get divorced, or want out?

A buy-sell agreement answers it in advance. It sets the terms, the valuation method, and often the funding, so the surviving owners aren't suddenly in business with a spouse, an ex, or an heir who never wanted to be there.

Without one, the business can end up in limbo exactly when it needs stability most.

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and seniors are a primary target. ๐Ÿšจ

Two of the fastest-growing scams right now:

๐Ÿ’ป The "tech support" call โ€” someone claims your computer is infected and asks for remote access or payment in gift cards.

๐Ÿ’” The romance scam โ€” a months-long online relationship that eventually turns into a request for money, always with a reason it can't wait.

Both work the same way: build trust, create urgency, isolate the person from anyone who might ask questions.

If a loved one suddenly has a new online friend they can't quite explain, or is making unusual withdrawals, it's worth a gentle conversation.

Let's clear up the most expensive misunderstanding in elder lawโ—

Medicare does not pay for long-term care.

It can cover a limited stretch of skilled nursing after a qualifying hospital stay, but it was never designed to cover ongoing custodial care. The daily help with bathing, dressing, eating, and moving that most families actually end up needing.

That care gets paid for from your savings, through long-term care insurance, or through Medicaid.

Families who learn this early have options. Families who learn it in a hospital hallway usually don't.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Have questions about how care would actually get paid for? Our team is here to help.
