WVU Peer Advocates

WVU Peer Advocates The WVU Peer Advocates is a program at WVU that utilizes expertly trained students as a resource for students affected by sexual violence on campus.

In line with WVU's commitment to the It's On Us campaign we have developed a student sexual assault and power-based personal violence first responders program, WVU Peer Advocates. In Fall 2015, the training for this program transformed into a 3-credit academic class. Collaborating with the Center for Service and Learning, Title IX and RDVIC just to name a few, the course offers students a minimum

of 60-service learning hours for working to end sexual violence on our campus. The purpose of the course is to provide students with a solid foundation to respond and advocate for student affected by sexual assault and power-based personal violence. Some of the course goals include:
β€’ Have an understanding WVU's commitment to improving power-based personal violence reporting and recovery on and off campus.
β€’ To be familiar with policies and regulations around sexual and power-based personal violence, Title IX, Clery and Violence Against Women Act (VAWA).
β€’ Introduce students to service-learning and the academic impact of civic engagement. The class meets Mondays in the Fall and Spring from 6:00-8:50pm. Even if you are not in the class stop by to check it out! Students who are interested in reaching out to a confidential WVU Peer Advocate can call 304-293-5600 and ask to speak to Akeya Carter-Bozman. So whether you have questions on what do to do if you have been sexually assaulted or if you are curious for a friend, reach out to us so we can provide you more options and resources!

Frida KahloΒ advanced LGBTQ+ history by openly living her life as a bisexual woman and challenging gender norms in early 20th century Mexico. Through her relationships with both men and women and her art, she provided q***r visibility and self-acceptance during a less-accepting era. In her self-portraits, Kahlo blurred gender boundaries by depicting herself in masculine attire, which continues to inspire the LGBTQ+ community today!

Kitty Tsui significantly impacted LGBTQ+ history as a incredible author, poet, and activist who advocates for the voices of Chinese American le****ns. Her 1983 book, "Words of a Woman Who Breathes Fire", was the FIRST known book published by a Chinese American le***an.

Tsui even helped initiate the AAPI q***r women's movement by co-founding the feminist performance collective Unbound Feet, which challenged harmful stereotypes of Asian women! By providing visibility for q***r Asian Americans through her writing, performance art, and athletic achievements, Tsui created representation for a community that had historically been erased and silenced for centuries.

In honor of lgbtq+ history month we will be sharing some of the many notable icons that have left a lasting impact on society.

James Baldwin lived with courage, wrote with fire, and loved without apology. As a Black gay man, he challenged America to confront its deepest contradictions. His words still echo with power, like this: β€œLove takes off the masks that we fear we cannot live without and know we cannot live within.” Baldwin did not just write history. He reshaped it!
