It’s National Estate Planning Awareness Week.

It’s a great time to take a few minutes to think about whether your estate plan still reflects your wishes.

Here are four questions to consider:
1. Do you have a will or trust, and when was it last reviewed?
2. Have you named someone you trust to make financial decisions if you’re unable to?
3. Have you named someone to make medical decisions on your behalf if you can’t?
4. Are your beneficiary designations still up to date and consistent with your wishes?

Life changes and your estate plan may need to change with it. A marriage, divorce, new child, change in finances, or other major life event can be a good reason to review your plan.

If you’re not sure where to start, we’re here to help.

Fines run up to $50 per violation. Riders under 18 need a parent consent form if a parent isn’t at the MVC appointment.

A living will and a living trust may sound similar, but they serve very different purposes. So, what’s the difference?

A living will is about your medical care. It communicates your wishes for medical treatment if you’re unable to speak or make decisions for yourself.

A living trust is about your assets. It can help manage and distribute property according to your wishes and, in many circumstances, help your loved ones avoid probate for assets properly placed in the trust.

They may sound alike, but they address two very different parts of an estate plan. Understanding what each document does and whether you need one or both is an important part of making sure your wishes are carried out.

As we continue recognizing National Estate Planning Awareness Month, we’re taking a closer look at one of the most important pieces of an estate plan: your will.

Partner Jeff Apell explains why everyone should have a will and why creating one is only part of the process. Major life milestones and changes can be important opportunities to review your will and make sure it still reflects your wishes.

Watch Jeff’s video to learn more about wills and when it may be time to review yours.

October is National Estate Planning Awareness Month.

And it’s a great reminder that estate planning is about much more than what happens after you’re gone. It’s about making sure your wishes are known and the people you trust are prepared to step in when needed.

- Who will make medical decisions if you can’t?
- Who will manage your finances?
- Who will care for your children?
- And how can you help your family avoid unnecessary complications during an already difficult time?

Without a plan in place, state laws may determine the answers for you.

Throughout October, we’ll be sharing information about the key documents, common estate planning mistakes, and some of the questions you may have been meaning to ask.

If it’s been a while since you’ve reviewed your estate plan, or you haven’t created one yet, this is a good time to start the conversation.

Going through a divorce? Don’t forget about your estate plan.

When you’re navigating a divorce, your focus is understandably on the immediate issues such as property, finances, custody and moving forward. But there’s another important area that shouldn’t be overlooked: your estate plan.

Divorce can affect your will, powers of attorney, beneficiary designations, trusts and more. And while New Jersey law provides some automatic protections after a divorce, they don’t cover everything.

Our latest article explores How Divorce Affects Your Estate Plan in New Jersey, including what may change automatically and what you should review and update to help protect your wishes and your family’s future.
