A fascinating read about a wrongly convicted man days away from losing his life. Data from the Death Penalty Information Center shows 167 exonerations since 1973. Primarily this has come from advances in DNA evidence and falsely extracted confessions. As a criminal defense attorney I stand firmly in favor of abolishing the death penalty nationwide, and hope that a broad bipartisan coalition can form to end this barbaric practice in the United States for good.

"No Knock" warrants are a creation of the nation's collective hysteria during the War on Drugs in the 1970s and '80s. The courts have virtually abandoned the common-law "knock and announce rule" which required police to announce their presence when serving a warrant. The Supreme Court validated this assault on all of our civil liberties because, God forbid, some people may try to flush their drugs down the toilet.

Everyone has a right to protect themselves when they reasonably believe an intruder is entering their home. If Breonna Taylor won't get justice, then I hope she finds peace.

*Lawsplainer Post* Felon Disenfranchisement

The 2020 general election will see massive changes in the way we vote. Colorado previously allowed convicted felons who served their sentences to vote. The legislature in 2019 expanded voting rights to include parolees who have not yet finished their parole terms.

Felony convictions carry massive consequences to your rights to vote, own a firearm, and eligibility for various state and federal benefits programs.

In English common law, a felony was an offense for which you could be made to forfeit land, titles, or be executed. Currently, felony offenses run the gamut from simple drug possession, to causing property damage of over $1,000, all the way up to capital murder.

Nearly 11,500 parolees in Colorado can now legally vote after a new law went into effect on Monday broadening voting rights for people convicted of a felony.
