Q: What are the differences between a contested and an uncontested divorce?

A: In an uncontested divorce, spouses reach an agreement on the issues, including children, support, and finances, that need to be resolved.

In a contested divorce, the parties have not been able to reach an agreement on some or all of the matters before them. In these cases the court may ultimately need to decide the unresolved issues for the couple.

A divorce case can also begin as contested and later become uncontested if the spouses reach a settlement before heading to court.
