What is a will, and what does it actually do?
A will communicates how you want certain property handled after your death. If you own personal property, or family heirlooms, this is where you make clear who should receive what. It also names a personal representative to carry out those instructions.
One thing surprises people. A will does not cover everything you own. Retirement accounts, life insurance, and bank accounts usually pass through their own beneficiary designations.
