Creating an estate plan is an important first step — but life doesn’t stand still.

It’s a good idea to periodically review your estate plan and take another look whenever you experience a major life change, such as:

• Marriage or divorce
• Birth or adoption of a child or grandchild
• Death of a beneficiary or the person you’ve chosen to handle your affairs
• Buying or selling significant property
• Major changes in your finances
• Retirement
• Changes in family relationships
• Moving to another state

Even if nothing significant has changed, reviewing your plan every few years can help ensure your will, trust, powers of attorney, and beneficiary designations still reflect your wishes.

An outdated estate plan can sometimes create almost as many problems as having no plan at all.

Getting a new job, starting a new relationship, or wanting to be closer to family may make moving out of Michigan seem like the right choice. But when children and a custody order are involved, you may not be able to simply pack up and leave.

Michigan custody law includes rules regarding a child’s legal residence. Depending on the custody arrangement and circumstances, relocating may require the other parent’s consent, court approval, or both.

The court may consider issues such as:

• How the move could improve the child’s and relocating parent’s quality of life
• How it would affect the existing parenting-time schedule
• Whether both parents have followed and used parenting time
• Whether a new parenting-time arrangement could preserve the child’s relationship with both parents
