Jan. 31 through Feb. 4 is Identity Theft Awareness Week which educates the public on how to reduce your risk of identity theft and recover it if it occurs. Identity theft can occur as a result of stolen mail, phishing, computer viruses, data breaches and more. In recognition of Identity Theft Awareness Week, we asked Columbia attorney and information privacy professional Jack Pringle, who is a member of the SC Bar Technology Committee, for some tips on how to keep your information online safe. Below are a few best practices for securing personal and business devices and networks:

1. 🔒 Use strong, unique passwords for your online accounts. Consider using a password manager.

2. ✅ Employ multi-factor authentication as appropriate, both on corporate networks (especially for remote access) and for popular online sites (e.g. Google, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn).

3. 💻 Be skeptical on the Internet, and with emails, texts and other communications.

4. 🖱 Never click links or open attachments in emails or texts that appear to come from your employer, bank or any other institution. Always login to your accounts directly.

Following these practices and creating security awareness will help reduce the risk of security compromises that can cost individuals and businesses dearly. Interested in hearing more tips?
