Here's what I love about nonprofits: we're always committed to doing the work better. 💛

It's been tough to work in nonprofits for the past several years - increased need, slashed funding, and public scrutiny on MN nonprofits especially. But that doesn't make our work any less important!

That's why I'm teaming up with Jon Pratt and Hamse Warfa at this year's MN Council of Nonprofits Annual Conference to talk about the Feeding Our Future fraud case and what we can learn going forward.

Here's the thing– are a totally different beast than other businesses.

Over the past 10 years serving , a LOT of clients have come to me with big burning problems AFTER they've worked with another attorney or professional. 🤦‍♀️

Why? When you're a new nonprofit, you look for someone free or deeply discounted.

Remember–you get what you pay for.

This might sound crazy, but not EVERY idea to do good in the community makes sense as a . 🤯

I know what you're thinking…"But Jess, for-profit companies are greedy and immoral!"

That doesn't have to be the case. If you're really trying to make a difference, it's important to start out right. And sometimes the idea makes more sense as a for-profit.

Serving as a board member isn't just an easy volunteer gig. 🙅‍♀️

You need some smart people who will bring knowledge, grit, and passion to the table to get the a new nonprofit off the ground. I see nonprofits approaching attorneys about board service ALL the time.

People tend to perceive as well off (aka: ready to write out the big fat donation check 💰) and knowledgeable of all areas of law (aka: ready to dispense free legal advice.) 😬

So, awesome choice for a board member, right?

Take things you see on social media with a grain of salt. 🧂

There's a lot of misinformation out there especially when it comes to figuring out which are best to donate to. My best advice? Do the research on your own, and don't just rely on what your great-aunt on Facebook has to say.
