When someone you love dies after being injured in a nursing home, your first thought probably isnât about evidence or records. Youâre grieving.
But if something about what happened doesnât sit right with you, donât ignore that feeling.
Request your loved oneâs medical records. Write down exactly what you were told, by whom, and whenâespecially if you received different explanations. And remember: the cause of death doesnât always tell you the whole story.
A fall can lead to a fracture. A pressure wound can lead to an infection. An infection can lead to sepsis. What happened in the days and weeks before someone died can matter just as much as what appears on the death certificate.
Sometimes there is a reasonable explanation for what happened. Sometimes there isnât.
The question I always come back to is simple:
How did we get here?
