The outbreak of the novel coronavirus has greatly disrupted life as we know it worldwide. In addition to the social distancing guidelines issued by the CDC, the increase in the amount of positive cases in Wisconsin and Illinois have led both states to implement “safer-at-home” orders. While these orders may be alarming, their purpose is to slow the spread of the virus by limiting unnecessary travel and contact between people.

It is normal to feel overwhelmed, scared, or worried about how COVID-19 will affect you and your future.

You are not alone. We are here for you.

We remain open to serve you during this difficult time. To accommodate our clients and make our business as safe as possible, we have implemented the following precautions:

We are currently not scheduling in-person meetings with clients. However, we are available for meetings via telephone or video chat.

We are working remotely as much as possible to limit our contact with others. When at our office, we are following all social distancing recommendations and have increased our sanitation protocols.

We are doing document signings by mail where possible. For documents that require witnesses, we are offering “drive-through” signings to execute the documents in person with little to no contact between individuals.

This is a challenging time, and it has caused many of us to reflect on the structures we have in place to manage our lives. If you find that your estate planning, business planning, or elder care plan are not what you want them to be, please contact us. It is never too late to create a plan that fits your life and protects your goals.

The SECURE Act, or Setting Every Community Up for Retirement Enhancement Act, took effect on January 1, 2020. The act was designed to make saving for retirement easier and more accessible, but it also changed the way an inherited IRA is paid out to beneficiaries.

The Act changed the age an employee must take Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) from 70 ½ to 72, allowing workers to save for retirement longer. It also reduced the number of hours part-time employees need to work in order to be eligible to enroll in an employer-sponsored 401K. As a benefit to employers, the Act offers tax incentives to small businesses for starting a retirement plan for their employees.

While the account owner lives, the IRA will be paid out to him or her based on his or her calculated life expectancy. But the SECURE Act changed the way inherited IRA accounts are paid out to beneficiaries after the original account owner’s death.

When people think of estate planning, there is a flurry of misconceived notions that often dance around one’s mind. A common misconception is, “I don’t have an estate.” It’s common to think “rich people” have an estate, but the “average person” does not.

This is a post more to the other professionals who deal with death and dying in a professional setting than to my current or potential clients.
