Business valuation questions and appeals can be some of the most stressful parts of a family law case for both lawyers and clients.

With that in mind, Barry J. Boline contributed two chapters to the State Bar of Wisconsin’s Family Law in Wisconsin: A Forms and Procedures Handbook – one on navigating business valuations, and one on handling appeals in family matters – with an emphasis on clear procedures, forms, and practical checklists.

Last week, I had the honor of speaking on Artificial Intelligence and the practice of family law at the May meeting of the Society of Family Lawyers/ Leander J. Foley, Jr. Matrimonial Inns of Court.

Thank you to everyone who attended for the thoughtful questions, engaging discussion, and candid conversation about where our profession is headed.

Artificial Intelligence is already changing the way lawyers work. In family law, it has the potential to improve efficiency, streamline document review, assist with financial analysis, and help attorneys deliver better and more cost-effective services to clients. At the same time, it comes with very real risks- including confidentiality concerns, inaccurate outputs, overreliance on technology, and the danger of losing the human judgement that is essential in emotionally complex cases.

Used thoughtfully, AI can be a powerful tool. Used carelessly, it can create significant problems for both lawyers and clients. The challenge for family law practitioners is not whether AI will become part of our practice-it already has- but how to use it ethically, responsibly, and effectively while continuing to provide the judgement, strategy, and personal advocacy our clients deserve.

I appreciate the opportunity to be a part of the conversation and look forward to seeing how the legal profession continues to adapt to these rapidly developing technologies.

Burbach & Stansbury S.C. is pleased to announce that attorney Barry J. Boline has completed the Divorce Mediation Training Program at Northwestern University.
This milestone reflects Barry’s continued commitment to expanding the firm’s mediation practice and offering clients meaningful alternatives to traditional litigation in family law matters.
With extensive experience in complex and high-conflict divorce cases, Barry brings a steady, practical approach to helping clients navigate difficult transitions. His work increasingly focuses on helping parties step back from conflict and identify practical, durable solutions that reflect what matters most to them.
“In mediation, the goal is to understand what’s really important to each person and help build a path forward from there,” Barry said. “When people stay engaged in shaping the outcome, the results tend to be more workable and more lasting.”
Barry’s mediation practice will focus on cases involving complex financial issues, including business interests and income considerations, as well as matters involving children where parents are seeking a more constructive resolution process.
This training further strengthens Burbach & Stansbury’s ability to provide flexible, client-centered approaches to resolving family law disputes.
