The Racine Zoo has a new zebra. A female Hartmann's mountain zebra foal was born early on Oct. 12 to Promise and Obi.

She's the third of her species born at the zoo and the first female. Hartmann's mountain zebras are considered vulnerable in southern Africa, and this birth was recommended by the species' Survival Plan — so she's a bit more than cute. Keepers watched Promise on night-vision cameras for weeks waiting on her.

The zoo says it hopes to introduce her to visitors soon, and in the meantime it's taking votes on her name on its page.

The Canadian Pacific Holiday Train comes back through Wisconsin in December — the lit-up train that pulls into a railway crossing, plays a short trackside set and rolls on.

Thirteen Wisconsin stops over three days. Closest to Milwaukee is Wauwatosa, at the Harwood Avenue crossing, 4:15 p.m. on Dec. 9 — then Hartland, Oconomowoc, Watertown and Columbus later that same evening. Sturtevant and Caledonia go the night before, Dec. 8. Dec. 10 runs west: Portage, Wisconsin Dells, Mauston, Tomah, Sparta and La Crosse.

Allen Stone is the act at every Wisconsin stop. Far enough out to actually plan around.

October is Residents' Rights Month, and most Wisconsin families don't realize these rights are written into a statute.

Wis. Stat. 50.09 gives residents of nursing homes and community-based residential facilities specific, enforceable rights. Among them:

— Private, unrestricted communication with family, physician and attorney, including sealed mail and phone calls
— Freedom from mental and physical abuse, and from chemical and physical restraints except when medically authorized and documented
— The right to present grievances without retaliation, and to organize with other residents
— Advance notice and an explanation before any transfer or discharge
— A say in their own care plan
— Treatment with courtesy, respect, and recognition of their dignity and individuality

"Except when medically authorized and documented" is the phrase to hold onto. Sedation for staff convenience is not care.

If something at a facility doesn't sit right with you, that instinct is usually worth a conversation. 414-777-7777.

Ask anyone who would know and they'll tell you Milwaukee's first frozen custard stand was Clark's, 1935 — the owners of Kopp's, Leon's and Gilles' included.

The city's own permit records say otherwise. A refreshment stand went up on N. 49th Street in May 1932, and by the spring of 1934 the classifieds were advertising it as Walker's Frozen Custard. Three years earlier than the story everybody repeats.

OnMilwaukee went into the permits, the classifieds and the census rolls to find it.

"The Legend of Sleepy Hollow," told around a bonfire, in an 1800s village after dark.

Old World Wisconsin's Legends & Lore has four nights left — Friday and Saturday, Oct. 16-17 and 23-24, 5 to 9:30 p.m., last entry at 8. Five of the walks are new this year, including a hunt through the "Northwoods" for a lost lumber camp and stories from the graveyard caretaker at St. Peter's.

It's out in Eagle, and advance tickets are required: $26 adults, $18 for ages 5-12, free under 5, parking included.

Boo at the Zoo runs two weekends this year — October 16 and 17, then 23 and 24.

New for 2026: Saturdays now run in daylight, 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Fridays stay evening-only, 4:30 to 9, and the Zoo closes to regular admission at 3:30 on those days.

Worth knowing if you've got a kid who is enormously excited about the costume and reliably asleep by 7:30.

The Brewers are opening the UW Credit Union Plaza outside American Family Field tonight. Gates at 6, first pitch at 7, parking free. It's outdoors, so bring a chair. Up to five tickets a person at brewers.com/Postseason.

A hit-and-run driver is never identified. Most people assume that's the end of the claim.

In Wisconsin it usually isn't. Under Wis. Stat. 632.32(4), an unidentified vehicle in a hit-and-run counts as an "uninsured motor vehicle" — which means your own uninsured motorist coverage can respond. Every Wisconsin auto policy has to carry UM at a minimum of $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident.

But that path has deadlines that close fast:

— The accident has to be reported within 72 hours.
— A sworn statement has to go to your insurer within 30 days.
— And the facts have to be corroborated by something beyond your own account.

Miss the 72 hours and a real claim can die on a technicality. If a car hits you and drives off, call the police that day. Not the next morning.
