A conversation can save a life.
Today I had the opportunity to participate in the Walk 4 Prostate Cancer at Cape Henlopen State Park.
This one was personal for me.
Some time ago, a conversation with Paul Williams made me stop and think about my own health. Because of that conversation, I went and got checked.
My results came back normal.
Today, I had several conversations with brothers who are prostate cancer survivors. Men who are here, living and thriving, and who talked about the importance of getting checked.
Those conversations hit differently.
About 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetime. For Black men, it’s approximately 1 in 6.
Those aren’t just statistics. Those are our fathers, husbands, brothers, sons, friends and people we love.
So today wasn’t just about a walk.
It was about conversations. It was about awareness. And most importantly, it was about taking action.
If you’re a man who has been putting off talking to your doctor, have the conversation. And if there’s a man you love, encourage him to talk with his healthcare provider about prostate cancer screening.
Paul had that conversation with me, and it moved me to take action.
Maybe today it’s my turn to have that conversation with you.
