Tax season in full swing, this is what I am seeing in my practice so far regarding the new tax law

Winners: small business owners and self employed taxpayers receive a nice 20% tax deduction on net income, which is saving small business owners and self employed taxpayers in some cases thousands. Famlies with children under the age of 17 are saving money in most cases as well

Losers: W2 Employees who have out of pocket business expenses can no longer deduct these expenses which is resulting in general higher tax bills for this group.

Push: W2 Employees with no dependents,or children over the age of 17 and retired people, I have seen some tax bills go down and and I have seen some rise depending on the specific circumstances.

Tax season just around the corner, this has my attention for tax years 2018 and forward. The new tax bill ( NOT PASSED YET) would have a child credit of 2k per child under the age of 17 and income cap at 500K.for married couples. The current law is 1K per child under 17 and income phase out starts at 110K. I have plenty of married clients that have household incomes of at least 150K that do not benefit from this credit at all. I am cautiously optimistic about the new tax bill, but need to see how all of the tax brackets play out.
