Courtroom Session V: Anatomy of Trials and Appeals ⚖️

On May 28, attorneys, judges, and legal professionals gathered in Key West for the final session of Courtroom's inaugural 2025–2026 season. Held at First Flight Island Restaurant & Brewery, "Anatomy of Trials and Appeals" provided an engaging discussion on advocacy, appellate practice, and the principles that define excellence in the courtroom.

We were honored to welcome our guest speakers: Chief Judge Edwin A. Scales, III and Chief Judge Richard J. Suarez (Ret.) of Florida's Third District Court of Appeal. Their insights and experience offered a fitting conclusion to a year dedicated to professional development, mentorship and courtroom excellence.

Thank you to our faculty, participants, and guest speakers who made this first season such a success, and to the outstanding staff at First Flight Island Restaurant & Brewery for their hospitality.

As we close this chapter, we also remember Justice R. Fred Lewis, whose vision and commitment to legal education helped inspire this program. His dedication to professionalism and mentoring the next generation of lawyers remains at the heart of the Courtroom Trial Advocacy Series.

The mission continues. Courtroom returns this October as we build on the foundation established during this inaugural year.

Justice R. Fred Lewis is remembered as a champion for the rights of people with disabilities, as a mentor, a legal powerhouse dedicated to justice, and an empathetic friend.
Throughout his career, he remained committed to expanding access to justice and civic education throughout Florida, creating the Justice Teaching initiative and later serving as an Eminent Professor of Law and Letters at Florida Southern College.
More recently, he served as a curriculum and course advisor for the Classroom to Courtroom series – later renamed Courtroom – sponsored by Leesfield & Partners. On Thursday, May 28, at the completion of the course’s first “semester,” Mr. Leesfield honored him, his legacy, and their five decades of friendship.
In speaking with reporters, Mr. Leesfield said that Justice Lewis was a leader within the South Florida legal community and was “certainly a giant in our profession.”
“His compassion for people, for all Floridians, and for litigants in the court system reflected his huge heart, empathy, and understanding,” Mr. Leesfield said. “He also possessed one of the keenest analytical legal minds imaginable."
On behalf of the attorneys and staff at Leesfield & Partners, we extend our deepest condolences to the Lewis family.

Leesfield & Partners filed a lawsuit on behalf of an 11-year-old girl who was sexually assaulted at a hotel pool in Miami Beach.

The assailant, who was not a guest on the property, circumvented the premises' inadequate security and entered the pool area. There, he encountered our 11-year-old client as she swam in the hotel's pool, groped and assaulted her.

This case is being handled by Partner Justin B. Shapiro and Trial Attorney Evan Robinson.

"We have no indication that they had visible presence of security anywhere on that hotel's grounds," Mr. Shapiro said. "Which is, I say, grossly inadequate because that is highly unusual in Miami Beach. Even hotels with subpar security have some showing of security around the premises."

Accountability is at the forefront of this case to protect vulnerable children, Mr. Robinson said.
“A hotel cannot invite families onto its property, profit from their trust, and then ignore basic safety measures that would protect children from harm,” he said.

Leesfield & Partners is committed to holding all involved parties accountable to the fullest extent of the law.

To the men and women in uniform, thank you for your service. At Leesfield & Partners, we are lucky to have two veterans at the firm - our Founder and Managing Partner, Ira Leesfield, and Alberto Arguello, a Paralegal.

Ira Leesfield, U.S. Army, Judge Advocate General Corps

Ira Leesfield, our Founder and Managing Partner, served as an army medic during the Vietnam War and did his basic training at Fort Polk in Louisiana. He then went on to Fort Sam in Houston, Texas, for advanced medical and combat training. He was later awarded the “American Spirit Medal of Honor” for patriotism and esprit de corps, a French term meaning a sense of unity and pride. His military service was completed in the Judge Advocate General Corps.

“I was 21 when I served as an enlisted army medic during the Vietnam War,” he said. “At Brooke Army Medical Center, we saw the eye-opening casualties of war. To me, Memorial Day is sacred.
This day is about memory, respect and making sure this country never forgets the cost of war.”

Alberto Arguello, U.S. Marine Corps Veteran

Alberto Arguello, a Legal Assistant at the firm, served in the U.S. Marine Corps from August 2002 until August 2006. He compelted training at the U.S. Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island in Beaufort County, South Carolina. He completed combat training at Camp Geiger in North Carolina and was later stationed at Camp Lejeune. He was deployed in Iraq from November 2005 until April 2006.

“I served with men and women who gave everything,” he said. “On this day, I choose to honor them for their sacrifices. We owe them that much, at the very least.”

Our Founder and Managing Partner, Ira Leesfield, was published in the Tallahassee Democrat discussing the importance of expanding access to practical legal education and mentorship for the next generation of trial lawyers.
The article highlights the firm’s free Courtroom Trial Advocacy Series, developed alongside former Florida Supreme Court Justice Fred Lewis and a distinguished group of judges and trial attorneys, to provide law students and young lawyers with hands-on litigation insight beyond the classroom.
As the legal profession continues to evolve, investing in mentorship, courtroom experience, and accessible education remains more important than ever.
