"Screenshot everything, just screenshot it." That's what one client's wife kept saying while he sat refreshing the transaction page, watching money leave.

She was right. Save the login IP history, the 2FA change confirmations, and every automated alert from that night. Transaction records stick around for years. The security logs showing who signed in, from where, and when are typically kept in active systems for roughly 30 to 90 days before they're archived or overwritten.

A "2FA changed" email often carries more weight than the withdrawal itself, because it can pin the moment the exchange's own system saw the access you're calling unauthorized.

Coinbase's user agreement also requires you to tell Coinbase Support immediately once you suspect your account is compromised. Waiting until Monday gives them something to argue about.

If you want a second set of eyes on your login history and those alerts, call us: (888) 578-6255.

My sister called last week, annoyed. Dad's account showed a trade neither of them remembered authorizing. No message from the broker, no note in his email. Just a date on the confirmation, unexplained.

Proving a broker traded without your say-so typically comes down to showing there was no authorization on record. If the broker claims you approved it, the absence of a signed discretionary agreement or written trading authorization frequently defeats that defense. The trade confirmation is often the most useful document for this kind of fight, more than the monthly statement.

Firms often keep these records for seven years or more, longer than they're required to, so there's usually time to track them down. Miami has more than its share of retirees and international investors whose kids only check a parent's statement once a season.

If something in that stack looks off, pull the trade confirmations. Before you chalk the loss up to a rough quarter, call us: (888) 578-6255.

I read Q2 statements over lunch this time of year, and the ones that make me pause aren't the biggest losers. They're the busiest.

Check the Activity/Transactions section first. Frequent trades plus heavy Fees and Commissions often indicate potential churning. Sudden margin-interest spikes you didn't request and realized losses even when markets rose are additional red flags.

Firms must maintain supervisory systems to detect such red flags; failure to catch them often becomes part of the claim.

Don't set the statement aside. You generally have six years from the event giving rise to your claim to be eligible for FINRA arbitration; that eligibility window is not the same as a statute of limitations and is often measured from when you knew or should have known the facts. Shorter statutes of limitation or repose may still bar a claim, and arbitrators can consider those defenses.

Your phone buzzes: new statement ready. You swipe it away, tell yourself you'll look this weekend.

If you're building a file, start with what firms typically produce: account statements, trade confirmations, and, for private placement investments, the PPM, subscription agreement, and marketing materials you received. Firms generally must retain these records for at least six years, even if you never downloaded them, though portal access may not go back that far.

When requesting old records, the process usually stalls once the account has moved to a new firm. What used to take one phone call now takes weeks.

FINRA's six-year window for arbitration runs from the event itself, generally measured as the occurrence or when you knew or should have known the facts, not from the day you finally open the file.

The earlier in the case, the more options you have. Call us: (888) 578-6255.
