Transactional lawyers are the most exposed profession in law right now.

Contract review was already one of the cleaner AI use cases. What has changed is the quality. Six months ago the output was interesting but imprecise. Now it is not just fast and free. In head-to-head testing against a several-thousand-dollar engagement, it is coming out ahead.

The attorneys billing $2,500 an hour are not generalists.

They carved out a niche narrow enough that no one else owns it. And when they walk into a courtroom, they know every case in that brief, every argument, every angle, because that depth is exactly what justifies the rate. AI can draft the brief. It cannot replace the judgment standing behind it.

The real question is not whether you can use the tools. It is whether you have become so precise in a specific area that clients have no real alternative.

Summary judgment prep used to mean weeks of manually pulling deposition transcripts, interrogatory responses, and document productions before you could write a single sentence of argument.

AI collapses that. Feed in the full record as it comes in, define the legal points you need to prove, and the model helps you build the motion. Not hypothetically. Now.

The firms that figure out how to run this well are going to move faster and argue cleaner than the ones still doing it by hand.

Harvey AI is at an $11 billion valuation. 100,000 lawyers across 1,300 firms are already using it.

This is not a future conversation. The adoption curve already happened. Lexis acquired Harvey. Westlaw built CoCounsel to compete directly. Two of the biggest names in legal research are now AI platforms fighting for the same budget line.

That budget line, for a 100-attorney firm, runs into the hundreds of thousands per year. A few thousand dollars per attorney, annually. And the expectation is that pricing comes down as these tools push toward wider public use.

The firms still debating whether AI belongs in legal practice are not being cautious. They are just behind.

Your opposing counsel may already be thinking about this.

A request for production targeting your AI chat history is not a stretch. If your prompts touch on claims, defenses, or case strategy, a strong argument exists that they are fair game for discovery. What you typed into Claude at 11pm tells a story about what you actually think your exposure is.

MF&H has not pulled this move yet. But they know why a client who has been using AI carelessly should be worried.
