One of the questions we hear all the time is:

"Where should I keep my estate planning documents?"

Our answer is simple...

Keep them somewhere that's safe—but not so safe that no one can find them.

A home safe or a secure filing cabinet is often a great option. Just as important, make sure the people you've named as your trustee, executor, or agent under your power of attorney know where your documents are stored and how to access them if they're ever needed.

For families who have been struggling with Alzheimer’s for years, finding hope can be difficult. But our friend Bonnie Dinkel, a passionate advocate for Alzheimer’s care and research, is giving us a powerful reason to be “Hopeful in My Lifetime.”

Bonnie is urging support for the bipartisan Alzheimer’s Early Detection Act, which would expand Medicare coverage for blood-based testing that can detect biomarkers associated with Alzheimer’s disease.

Why does this matter? Because earlier detection can mean earlier treatment. With new medications now available that may slow the progression of Alzheimer’s for some patients, knowing sooner could make an enormous difference.

Bonnie compares this moment to a turning point in the fight against breast cancer. In 1991, Congress mandated Medicare coverage for mammograms. Today, screening is widely available, cancers are being detected earlier, and the five-year survival rate for localized breast cancer is approximately 99%.

Could we be approaching a similar turning point with Alzheimer’s?

In January, we put on the wigs, rhinestones and a whole lot of pink to celebrate Dolly Parton’s 80th birthday. Today, we’re remembering something much bigger — the incredible legacy she leaves behind.

Dolly gave the world unforgettable music, plenty of laughter and a style all her own. But she also gave back in ways that will continue long after her lifetime — opening doors, giving millions of children access to books and using her success to make life a little better for others.

That’s the beautiful thing about a legacy. It isn’t just what you leave behind. It’s what you teach, who you help and how people remember the way you made them feel.

Today, we’re remembering a true original. There will never be another Dolly. 💗

It's a situation that can lead to family conflicts, unnecessary expenses, and a whole lot of stress. So, take control of your legacy and make sure your loved ones are protected, even when you're no longer around.

One of the biggest misconceptions we hear is:

"I have a will, so everything will go through my will."

Not necessarily.

In Louisiana, some assets pass directly to the person you've named as a beneficiary. That means they generally do not go through the probate process.

Examples include:
• Life insurance
• Retirement accounts (IRAs and 401(k)s)
• Many payable-on-death (POD) or transfer-on-death (TOD) accounts

Here's the important part...

Those beneficiary designations usually control who receives the asset—even if your will or trust says something different.

We've seen situations where an outdated beneficiary designation completely changed who inherited an account.

That's why estate planning isn't just about preparing documents. It's also about making sure your assets, beneficiary designations, and estate plan all work together.

If it's been a while since you've reviewed your beneficiaries, this is a great reminder to pull them out and take another look. A few minutes today could save your family significant time, expense, and confusion in the future.

If you’re a Louisiana state employee or retiree, this is an important reminder from LASERS.

Having a Power of Attorney is one thing. Making sure it gives the right authority—and will be accepted by the institutions you may need it for—is another.

What happens to your LASERS account if you can't manage it yourself?

Planning ahead can make things easier for you and the person you trust to help.

A Power of Attorney (POA) allows someone you designate to act on your behalf, including handling financial matters if you become unable to do so.

Here's what LASERS members should know:

✅ We can only discuss your account with someone else or accept documents signed by them if an approved POA is on file with LASERS.

❌ Medical POAs are not accepted because they apply only to healthcare decisions.

Creating a trust is an important first step.

Funding your trust is what makes it work.

One of the most common misconceptions we hear is that simply signing a trust means everything is automatically covered.

In reality, a trust can only control assets that have been properly funded (transferred) into the trust or coordinated with your overall estate plan.

If certain assets are never transferred, they may still be subject to a Louisiana succession, even though you have a trust.

That's why we spend time helping our clients coordinate their assets—not just prepare legal documents.
