Violence in the Legal Workplace (email From: John F. Phelps [email protected] via icontactmail9.com)
HOW WOULD YOU HANDLE WORKPLACE VIOLENCE?
By now everyone in Arizona's legal community likely knows about the shootings that took place during the last few days in Scottsdale. Police say the suspect in the case shot himself this morning after being confronted by law enforcement.
The fact that the victims appear to have been related to the suspect's divorce case highlights a concern that has existed within the legal community for some time. Lawyers and their support staff routinely deal with individuals who are in stressful situations. While most people deal with that in a civilized fashion, there is no question that some people do not. This latest incident is not the first and likely, unfortunately, not the last.
Several years ago we did a survey of Arizona attorneys to find out how many had faced violent situations. 42% of those responding reported that they had been threatened and/or physically assaulted at least once. What this means is that your law office should have a plan in place in the event that someone takes the threat to the next level. Consider having a discussion with those in your workplace about what to do if someone makes a threat or physically shows up at your workplace to cause harm.
We have a web page with resources available to help you prepare for such threats. It includes a checklist for you to review with others in your office.
It's impossible to guarantee that our offices won't face threats. But there are steps you can take to ensure that your workplace is better prepared. By example, we have had several risk assessments conducted at our buildings in Phoenix and Tucson, and conduct regular active-shooting training with our staff. If there is anything we can do to assist you in this regard, don't hesitate to call on us.
Lastly, our thoughts and prayers go out to the family, friends, and co-workers of those killed in this terrible crime.
Sincerely,
John Phelps
