With so many contractors coming into Northwest Indiana following the recent storms, homeowners should not simply take a contractorโs word that they are โlicensed and insured.โ
Before allowing someone to work on your home:
โ
Call your city or town hall. Ask for the Building Department, Planning Department, or contractor licensing office and ask whether the contractor is currently licensed or registered to perform the type of work being proposed in your community.
Verify insurance independently. Ask for a current certificate of insurance showing liability coverage and, when applicable, workersโ compensation coverage. Call the insurance agent or carrier listed on the certificate and confirm that the policy is current.
โ
Make sure the names match. The company name on the contract should match the contractor you researched and the business identified on the insurance documentation.
Do not rely solely on a business card, yard sign, professional-looking truck, website, or a piece of paper saying the contractor is โlicensed and insured.
A reputable contractor should have no problem with you checking their credentials.
