With the recent release of 2017 property appraisal values, is your Shelby County property being taxed fairly? There are several options for appealing your tax appraisal.
First, the Shelby County Assessor offers an Informal Review on its website, http://www.assessor.shelby.tn.us. Click on Online Informal Review, and submit what you believe to be a fair valuation of your home's fair market value, and any supporting documentation. This rarely results in absolute approval, but often can reduce your tax burden.
Next, you may schedule an appeal with the County Board of Equalization. The Board will require supporting documentation.
If you are not satisfied with the County Board of Equalization's decision, you may appeal to the State Board of Equalization in Nashville. This process is much the same as the County Board, and you or your representative must personally appear.
If you are still not satisfied with the State Board of Equalization's decision, you may file an appeal with the Chancery Court of Shelby County. All court rules, including those of Evidence, are strictly observed. Legal representation is highly recommended.
