Did you know that Labor Day started out as a way to recognize the poor working conditions of working Americans? It is absolutely necessary to rest and to celebrate ourselves for all of our hard work.

One of the main purposes behind "Protecting our Ish" is recognizing our hard work and understanding that, without it, there would be no legacy. There would be nothing to enjoy at retirement and, even more importantly, nothing to leave our families. What a shame it would be to allow our hard work to go unrecognized.

Take a day to show yourself some grace and enjoy some pride in what you have built. No, we may not be where we want to be but yes, we are getting there.

Happy Labor Day to all of my hardworking friends who are protecting their "Ish" just as much as I am.

When it comes to legal responsibility, not all 18-year-olds are equally prepared. Some may still require parental guidance and assistance. To ensure that you can provide this support, it is important for your child to sign three essential legal documents upon turning 18. These documents will grant you the necessary legal rights to help your child effectively.

Legal documents such as durable power of attorney, a healthcare proxy and a HIPAA release can give parents the legal right to make decisions if their child needs help.

I walked through the last days with a client. This happens often but, each time, I take something home with me. The thing is, when your life involves discussing death and disability with people, there is a certain reality that you walk with. You don't get the benefit of living "care-free" like some. You don't have the privilege of putting your self before others all the time without a care about how that affects others. No. When you do what I do, you are ALWAYS thinking about the realities of life and death and how, in just an instant, life can change.

My client told me that she didn't believe that she had enough life insurance for her children. The sad truth was that it was too late by then. So, I talked to her about life, helping her to appreciate that what she had done was a gift and that her kids would appreciate it. But what I do know is that she said that she didn't do enough, and she left this world with that. I silently cried for her because that was something that I could not help her with and I strive to help clients attain peace of mind.

Lessons for today: do not wait until it is too late. Not next year, not when ____ (insert here whatever excuse you have had) happens. Now. The time is now. Protect your assets. Get enough life insurance. Get an attorney to prepare your will. Establish your trust. Write a plan. Then execute. I don't want you to be like her, without peace.

Let me help you organize now.
