From "Helping Your Kids Cope With Divorce" by Gary Neuman:

Children are usually fully capable of understanding things if they are presented information in a way that is meaningful to them. Before you talk with your child on any important matter regarding your divorce, remember to plan ahead and structure your comments to
- communicate the point you're trying to make in clear language;
- empathize: let your child know you understand how he feels:
- acknowledge and describe how each change will affect your child;
- anticipate and answer questions you're reasonably sure your child will have;
- invite further questions and answer them clearly.

When should you seek a modification of your parenting schedule?

Making the decision to return to mediation and/or court to change your parenting schedule is an extremely difficult decision. In making this decision, talk to your attorney about the concerns you have for your child. The most important consideration is the child's best interest so you must be able to articulate how the schedule is impacting your child. Next, you must evaluate whether a change in the schedule will solve the problems your child is facing. Some problems are going to exist no matter what parenting schedule you follow. In those instances, your attorney should be able to provide you with solutions to consider in the alternative, or in combination with a schedule change. It is important that you consult with an experienced attorney so you can adequately prepare for mediation/court and avoid unnecessary litigation.

I recently conducted a continuing legal education course for family law attorneys on the use of parenting coordinators in high conflict custody cases. Research tells us that chronic high conflict between parents can actually alter the way a child's brain functions. The use of a mediator or parenting coordinator trained in high conflict dispute resolution is an effective way to reduce this conflict.

I am trained as a parenting coordinator in high conflict disputes and use those skills in my own mediation practice to address the unique needs of a high conflict case. I also use those same skills to help my own clients prepare for litigation when they are the victim of a high conflict spouse or ex-spouse.

It is great to see these discussions centering around the impact litigation and high conflict have on children.

Memphis is undoubtedly heartbroken and weary given the amount of tragedy we’ve experienced this week. Our deepest sympathies are with the families and friends affected by the recent events.

As we take the time to collect ourselves and process what has happened, we still believe in Memphis and what our city means to the world and most importantly, those who call it home. We encourage all who champion Memphis to continue to operate from a place of love and compassion. Our light shines brighter together. 💙
