Family law asks an attorney to be two things at once: a steady negotiator and a prepared trial lawyer.

Our next associate attorney will be both.

The role covers the full range of family law matters, including divorce, child custody and support, paternity, adoption, dependency and neglect, alimony, and Hague Convention cases. You will work closely with our managing partner and directly with clients.

We are looking for someone organized and proactive, comfortable in court and on Zoom, with sound judgment and the compassion and maturity to work with clients in crisis.

The role calls for 0 to 3 years of litigation experience. Tennessee and Mississippi licensing is preferred but not required.

He has been there since day one, and paternity was established at the hospital. So he has equal rights to his child, right?

Not automatically. In Tennessee, when parents are not married, the mother has custody of the child unless and until a court order says otherwise.

The document that matters is the Voluntary Acknowledgment of Paternity, a legal form both parents sign. A properly completed acknowledgment establishes legal fatherhood, subject to the law's rescission and challenge procedures. It does not, by itself, establish equal parenting time or joint decision-making authority. A court order can establish those arrangements.

An enforceable support order and a court-ordered parenting schedule address separate needs. Establishing paternity is an important step toward both.

Once legal parentage is established, a court can approve a parenting plan and set support.

When a business is part of a marriage, the property is not always held in either spouse's name. Real estate, equipment, and investment accounts may be titled to an LLC or a corporation instead.

That raises real questions in a divorce. How is an ownership interest in the entity classified? How is it valued? And when can a court look past the entity itself?

Behind the Veil: Marital Property and Business Entities is a professional education series built around those questions. It covers the relevant Tennessee statutes in Title 36 (domestic relations) and Title 48 (corporations and associations), along with the case law on marital property held through business entities.

Partner Chelsea Connor serves as co-chair of the series. She studied accountancy before law school, a background well suited to a subject where family law and business finance meet.

If you share a child and live in Mississippi, the rules for a first custody decision changed this summer.

Mississippi's new law creates a rebuttable presumption favoring joint custody and equal parenting time for initial temporary and initial final custody orders entered after July 1, 2026. It does not apply to modifications of custody orders. The court can order a different arrangement when the evidence rebuts the presumption, including under the law's family violence provisions.

The law is new, and Mississippi courts are still working out how they will apply it. Tennessee has its own rules for parenting time, so the answer can depend on which state your case belongs in.

The first meeting with a family law attorney is easier when you know what to walk in with. Here is what helps.

A short timeline of your situation: key dates, moves, separations, and anything already filed. Basic financial documents if you have them: recent pay stubs, tax returns, and a rough list of assets and debts. Any existing court orders or agreements. And your questions, written down, because they are easy to forget in the moment.

What you do not need: a perfect story, every document, or a decision already made. The consultation is where the plan starts, not where it has to be finished.

Ask people who have left an abusive relationship what helped, and one answer comes up again and again: someone believed them.

If you suspect a friend or family member is being hurt, you do not have to be an expert to help. A few things that matter:

Listen without pushing for a decision. Leaving is complicated, and the safest timing is not always obvious from the outside.

Say clearly that it is not their fault, and that you are there regardless of what they decide.

Help them find resources rather than taking over. The National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 can help them build a safety plan. If calling is not safe, they can text START to 88788.

Keep what they tell you private.

Abuse thrives on isolation. Being a steady, non-judgmental presence is more powerful than it feels.

Two parents shake hands and agree that neither will pay the other child support. Simple, right? Not in Tennessee.

Child support belongs to the child, not the parents. Tennessee courts calculate it using the state's guidelines, and an agreement to skip it, or to set it far below the guideline amount, is not enforceable just because both parents signed off on it.

A court can approve a deviation from the guideline, but it has to be justified and written into the order with the reasons stated. Informal side deals, verbal agreements, and handshake arrangements are the ones that fall apart later.

If you and your co-parent want an arrangement that fits your situation, the path is through the court, not around it.
