Does the tax preparer refuse to sign the return? That is a major red flag.
The IRS recently released the annual Dirty Dozen list, and "Ghost Preparers" are a top concern. These individuals charge a fee to prepare tax returns but refuse to sign the documents as the paid preparer. By law, anyone who is paid to prepare or assist in preparing federal tax returns must have a valid Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN) and sign the return.
Why does this matter? A preparer who will not sign the return is often looking to make a quick profit while leaving the taxpayer fully responsible for any errors, fraudulent claims, or audit issues. They may promise inflated refunds or hide their identity to avoid IRS scrutiny.
At Craven Financial Solutions, we believe in transparency and accountability. Kevin Craven is a Licensed Enrolled Agent, which means he is federally authorized to represent taxpayers before the IRS. We sign every return we prepare because we stand behind our work.
Do not let a "ghost" haunt the finances.
