💜 SEPTEMBER IS SU***DE PREVENTION MONTH 💜

For many Veterans, the battle doesn’t end when the uniform comes off. Some wounds can’t be seen, and some of the hardest battles are fought quietly.

PTSD is real. Its effects can reach far beyond memories of service — impacting sleep, relationships, work, family life, and a Veteran’s ability to simply make it through the day.

At McKown & Myers, LLP, we work with Veterans living with PTSD and other service-connected mental health conditions every day. We hear their stories. We see the battles that don’t show on the outside. And we know that behind every VA claim is a real person whose struggle deserves to be acknowledged.

But this month isn’t only about our Veterans. It’s about our families, our friends, our coworkers, our neighbors — anyone who may be struggling behind a smile.

Check on your people. Listen without judgment. Stay a little longer. Remind them that their story isn’t over.

🇺🇸⚖️ SEPTEMBER 2026 ATTORNEY SPOTLIGHT: WILLIAM “TOM” MYERS

This month, we’re putting the spotlight on the man who helps lead the way at McKown & Myers, LLP.

Before he was an attorney, Tom wore the uniform of the United States Marine Corps. He went on to serve his community in law enforcement and the prosecutor’s office before entering private practice—and eventually dedicating his practice exclusively to helping Veterans navigate the VA disability system.

Today, Tom leads our team with the same values that have shaped his entire career: service, commitment, accountability, and fighting for the people who need someone in their corner.

He has successfully handled thousands of VA disability claims, but behind every claim is something more important—a Veteran and a family who deserve to be heard.

From serving his country to serving Veterans across the country, Tom’s mission has never strayed far from one thing:

🇺🇸 Serving those who served.

🇺🇸 110 YEARS OF ANSWERING THE CALL.

On August 29, 1916, the United States Marine Corps Reserve was established.

For 110 years, Reserve Marines have balanced careers, families and communities with a commitment few are willing to make — remaining ready to answer their nation’s call.

From World Wars to modern conflicts, humanitarian missions and emergencies at home and abroad, Reserve Marines have served alongside their active-duty brothers and sisters when our country needed them most.

Today, we honor every Marine who has worn the uniform as a member of the Reserve.

Relevant. Ready. Responsive.

Happy 110th Birthday, Marine Corps Reserve. 🇺🇸

The biggest mistake many Veterans make after a VA denial? Assuming it’s over.

A denied VA claim doesn’t always mean you have to start from scratch—or that you’re out of options.

Depending on the reason for your denial, you may be eligible for:
✔️ Higher-Level Review
✔️ Supplemental Claim
✔️ Appeal to the Board of Veterans’ Appeals

The key isn’t simply filing another claim—it’s understanding why the VA denied your claim and what evidence or legal arguments could make a difference.

Every VA decision contains important information. Knowing how to interpret it can be the first step toward securing the benefits you’ve earned through your service.

At McKown & Myers, we’re committed to helping Veterans understand their options and navigate the VA claims and appeals process with confidence.

🇺🇸 Some things are bigger than all of us.

Different backgrounds. Different stories. Different walks of life.

But when we come together to carry the flag that represents the freedoms we share, we’re reminded of something that matters:

Community. Country. Gratitude.

To those who have served, sacrificed, and continue to protect those freedoms — thank you.

We are proud to stand behind you. ❤️🤍💙

🚨 MORE THAN 70,000 VA BENEFIT CLAIMS REMAIN BACKLOGGED NATIONWIDE 🇺🇸

Even as the Department of Veterans Affairs reports major progress reducing its claims backlog, tens of thousands of veterans and survivors are still waiting on decisions.

According to the Veterans Benefits Administration, 70,529 disability compensation and pension claims are currently considered backlogged — meaning they have been waiting more than 125 days for a decision.

In total, the VA reports more than 611,000 pending compensation and pension claims in its inventory.

The backlog includes claims involving service-connected disabilities, supplemental claims, Agent Orange-related conditions, pensions and other benefits for veterans and survivors.

For veterans dealing with an injury, illness, PTSD, toxic exposure or another service-connected condition, navigating the claims process can become another battle of its own.

The good news: the backlog has fallen dramatically from previous levels, and VA says the average disability-related claim took about 68.6 days to complete in July.

But for the veterans still waiting, every day matters.

🇺🇸 Veterans earned these benefits through their service. They deserve a process that works for them.

A good C&P exam doesn’t always guarantee a favorable VA decision.

Many Veterans walk away from a Compensation & Pension (C&P) exam feeling like it went well and assume their VA disability claim will be approved. Unfortunately, the C&P exam is only one part of the VA claims process.

When making a VA Rating Decision, the VA may consider:

• Medical opinions
• Service records
• Lay statements
• Treatment records
• Laws governing VA disability benefits

Even a favorable C&P exam can be outweighed by a weak medical rationale—or favorable evidence may be overlooked.

That’s why it’s so important to carefully read your VA Rating Decision, especially the reasons the VA gives for a denial. Understanding why your claim was denied can help determine what your next step should be.

If you’ve received a VA claim denial, McKown & Myers can help you understand your decision and explore your options for moving forward.

✨ Fact Friday 🇺🇸

Right now, more than 1.3 million active-duty service members are serving around the world—training, deploying, standing watch, and answering the call whenever duty demands.

Their sacrifices often go unseen, but they are never unappreciated.

Today, we honor the men and women currently wearing the uniform and thank them for their unwavering commitment to protecting our nation and our freedoms. ❤️🤍💙

🇺🇸 To every service member serving today: Thank you. We see you. We appreciate you.

🎥 3 things you may want to avoid saying at your C&P exam…

Veterans are often used to pushing through and minimizing what they’re experiencing—but during a C&P exam, it’s important that the examiner understands how your condition truly impacts your daily life.

Be honest. Be specific. Don’t exaggerate—but don’t minimize either.
