Some of the most common estate planning triggers are the ones people forget to think of as triggers.

Signing a trust is one step. Funding a trust is a second, separate step.

We see families who thought the trust was the whole plan, then discover later that the house, the accounts, or the investment property were never actually moved into it. The intent was there. The follow-through was not.

A trust with the wrong assets outside of it can create the same probate the family thought they had avoided.

Naming someone to handle digital assets is different from naming someone to handle the rest of the estate.

The person who is most comfortable with paperwork may not be the same person who can navigate two-factor authentication, cloud accounts, and password managers. A digital fiduciary role can be its own conversation.

The goal is that when the family needs access, someone who is prepared for that specific job actually has what they need.

Making sure that person could actually help in a real emergency is something else.

Before an international trip, a lot of parents realize they have talked through the plan, but have not backed it up with the right paperwork, contact details, or decision-making support.
