A lot of people want to physically separate but feel stuck, especially when they are the sole income provider for the family. If we split up, who pays for what?

"Amicable" gets misread as "we agree on everything" or "nobody stands up for anything." That is not what it means.

An amicable divorce is not about pretending you see eye to eye. You can still disagree. You can still negotiate hard for what matters to you and your children. The difference is that you have decided not to turn every single issue into a war.

It is a strategy, not a personality type. It protects your time, your money, and your family from damage that does not help anyone, and it still leaves room for strong, clear advocacy when something truly matters.

Lower conflict does not mean lower effort or a weaker position. In many cases, it is simply the smarter way through.

It sounds like a win. The other person will not even hire a lawyer, so this should be simple and cheap, right?

It is actually one of the biggest hurdles we see.

This is why we often prefer the other side to have a lawyer too, ideally through an amicable, out of court process. A reasonable attorney across the table can keep expectations realistic, reason with their own client, and help the whole thing actually settle.

Lower conflict does not mean no one on the other side has guidance. Sometimes the calmest path runs through two lawyers, not one.

There is something called innocent spouse relief, and a lot of people going through divorce have never heard of it.

Here's the idea. When you file a joint tax return, both of you are generally responsible for the full amount owed, even if one spouse was the one handling the finances. So if your spouse understated income, hid earnings, or made errors on a joint return without your knowledge, you could end up on the hook for a tax debt you didn't create.

Innocent spouse relief may give you a way to ask the IRS not to hold you responsible for that portion. It isn't automatic, and whether you qualify depends on your specific situation, including what you knew and when. But for many people, it's an option worth understanding before finalizing a divorce.

When I started writing this book, I had one person in mind. Someone standing at the very beginning of a divorce, unsure where to turn, hoping there was a way through that did not have to destroy their family, their finances, or their peace of mind. This week, Holistic Divorce reached #1 in multiple categories on Amazon, including Alternative Dispute Resolution.

To everyone who joined the launch list, bought a copy, passed it along to a friend who needed it, and sent such kind words this week, thank you. To the attorneys, mediators, and early readers who gave their time and their honest thoughts on the manuscript, thank you. When one spouse depends on the other financially, fear can drive the whole process. If that person feels blindsided, they may rush to hire the most aggressive attorney they can find, and things escalate fast.

One of the most effective ways to keep a divorce calm is to help the other person feel secure, often by putting protections in writing early. Reassurance is not weakness. It's strategy, and it can save everyone real money and stress.

Even in a cooperative divorce, one thing is important to understand. An attorney represents one person, not both, and is not a neutral party. So if your household is only hiring one lawyer, you want to be the client.

The other spouse can still have their own attorney review the agreement for peace of mind. That kind of second look is healthy, and it does not have to turn things adversarial.
