📋 New Federal Income Tax Brackets for 2026 — What You Need to Know

The IRS has released updated federal income tax brackets for 2026 (for returns filed in 2027). While the same seven tax rates apply, income thresholds have been adjusted upward to account for inflation — helping prevent "bracket creep."

A few highlights:
âś… Standard deduction increases to $16,100 (single) / $32,200 (married filing jointly)
âś… The top 37% rate now kicks in above $640,600 for single filers
âś… Small threshold shifts can still impact retirement planning, investment timing, and charitable giving

Big news for estate planning in 2026!

Federal legislation has increased the estate and gift tax exemption to $15 million per person — meaning married couples could potentially pass $30 million or more to their heirs without federal estate tax.

But here's what Minnesota residents need to know: Minnesota has its own estate tax with a much lower exemption threshold. So even if your estate is under the federal limit, you could still owe state taxes.

Now is a great time to review your estate plan — especially if it was drafted before 2026 or under older tax rules.

Minnesota’s Pass-Through Entity (PTE) tax election has officially expired after the 2025 tax year—and it could have a meaningful impact on business owners.

This election allowed certain entities to pay state income tax at the entity level, helping many owners work around federal SALT deduction limits. Beginning in 2026, that option is no longer available unless the Legislature acts to extend it.

What does this mean?
➡️ Taxes shift back to the individual owner level
➡️ Federal deduction limitations may return
➡️ 2026 tax planning just became more complex

If you own an S corporation, partnership, or LLC, now is the time to revisit your tax strategy.
